UFOMAMMUT unveils ‘Crookhead’ EP: a portentous premonition of their 25th anniversary milestone

September 19, 2023
1 min read

Italy’s psychedelic doom maestros UFOMAMMUT have proclaimed the arrival of their new EP, “Crookhead.” Scheduled for a fortuitous Halloween release via their in-house label, Supernatural Cat Records, the EP serves as a cosmic preamble to the trio’s upcoming 25th-anniversary celebration in 2024.

Emerging in the late 1990s from the ephemeral remnants of Judy Corda, UFOMAMMUT—comprising Poia on guitars and effects, Urlo on bass, vocals, and synthesizers, and new drummer Levre—have spent more than two decades orchestrating a transcendent blend of titanic riffs and otherworldly psychedelia.

Their sonic aura, both monumental and nuanced, unfurls a topography of cyclopean heaviness fused with a keen apprehension of musical history’s psychedelic epochs.

The band’s opus from 2022, “Fenice,” offered a transformative listening experience that marked a tectonic shift in their musical paradigm. Exploring sonic realms hitherto uncharted in their discography, the album signaled a kind of rebirth, living up to its name—”phoenix” in Italian. This was especially notable as it was the first to feature Levre behind the drums, unveiling an intimate, experimental tonality.

Adding to their repertoire, UFOMAMMUT recently took part in Magnetic Eye Records’ “Superunknown Redux,” offering their unique take on Soundgarden’s “Let Me Drown,” which swiftly gained acclaim for its idiosyncratic interpretation and became a cornerstone of the compilation.

Recorded at Italy’s Flat Scenario Studio by Lorenzo Stecconi, the forthcoming “Crookhead” EP continues to expand upon the band’s astral philosophies.

Assisted by studio tech Luca Grossi, the project was also mixed and mastered at Triple Sun by Stecconi. This hallucinatory offering comprises three new tracks: “Crookhead,” “Supernova,” and “Vibrhate,” each a vertiginous descent into the trio’s evolving sonorous cosmos.
