It isn’t often that a seasoned musical veteran like Walter Schreifels (QUCIKSAND, GORILLA BISCUITS, RIVAL SCHOOLS) gets to do something that takes him out of his comfort zone but that’s certainly true of Schreifels’ role in his latest musical project, VANISHING LIFE. The band—which features Schreifels (guitar/vocals), RISE AGAINST’s Zach Blair (guitar), ….AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD’s Autry Fulbright (bass) and Jamie Miller (drums)—was conceptualized at a music festival and now you can check out their song “People Running” from their upcoming seven-inch on Collect Records which comes out on October 14.
Earlier this week, we spoke to Schreifels about how the project came together, what it’s like for him to be in a band where he isn’t responsible for writing the songs and why he’s looking forward performing live without a guitar. Better yet, you can see for yourself when the act make their debut with two performance/signings on October 18 at 2 PM at Generation Records in New York City and at 6 PM at Looney Tunes Records in West Babylon, New York.

Collect Records is thrilled to bring you the debut single from Vanishing Life, a new band formed by some well-known faces: Walter Schreifels (Quicksand,Gorilla Biscuits), Zach Blair (Rise Against), Jamie Miller (…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead), and Autry Fulbright (Midnight Masses, …And you Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead). The group’s first 7” release and Digital EP features “People Running” b/w “Vanishing Life” and is due out on October 14, 2014, to be followed by a full-length album set for release on Collect Records in 2015. The band will make their live debut on October 18th in NYC with two in-stores in one day: 2PM @ Generation Records in NYC and 6PM @ Looney Tunes Records in West Babylon, NY.
Vanishing Life was first conceived in the spring of 2013 at Belgium’s GROEZROCK FESTIVAL, where all four members were scheduled to perform with their respective bands alongside—oddly enough—Collect Records label principals Geoff Rickly (Thursday/United Nations) and Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason). Says Autry, “The idea was to do fun, stripped down, fist-pumping rock that was inspired by the sounds that we commonly appreciated—from Mission of Burma to the Wipers and Black Flag, among others.” Later that year, Autry and Walter met up again, and after seeing Zach absolutely destroy as guest guitarist with the Descendents on “Suburban Home” at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Festival, the pair got in touch with Jamie and solidified the line-up. A band was born.
While all four members of Vanishing Life bring with them a wealth of skills across various genres, their firm foundation in punk and hardcore resonates with sheer experience: “People Running” is English punk-strut meets New York hardcore stomp strengthened by Schreifels’ trademark melodic vocal, while the band’s namesake track emits the kind of frantic energy that thrives in a kinetic live space – driving, jolting, equal parts tension and release. The single is immediate and affecting, and it only seems fitting that Collect Records—a label that, Geoff Rickly says, was founded to “give great records a supportive home”—is releasing it, only a year and a half after one random day in Belgium.
“People Running / Vanishing Life” is out on October 14th on Collect Records and look for news of their debut full-length in 2015. As for their live debut, catch Vanishing Life on October 18th at two live in-stores in one day where they’ll be doing a brief set and signing, details below.
