My favorite part of reviewing new music is, well, reviewing new music! But aside from that, getting exposed to different genres and subgenres is always a party plus. Another bonus is listening to a lot of new music from Europe, which is not something that was previously common to me. I was sent a promo of an EP that caught my eye with an eerie piece of cover art of a Peacock going up against a Moose in some head to head combat type shit. OK, count me in! The album is a new split EP from two European artists called MYTERI and PROCRASTINATE. MYTERI hail from Gothenburg, Sweden and have been playing since 2013. They have been described as a heavy “Neo-Death Crust” punk band. PROCRASTINATE hails from Karditsa, Greece, has also been around since 2013 and have a reputation for playing their own brand of “Crust-Grind”.
The MYTERI / PROCRASTINATE split is out now via Alerta Antifascista Records,Phobia Records,Halvfabrikat Records, and Nothing to Harvest Records.
Kicking off the EP, PROCRASTINATE starts off with Dissect the Invisible Hand. I tell you what, this track had a decent amount of melody going on and reminded me a bit of Cave In and Poison the Well. It was a good opening track indeed.
The next track, Casual Ignorance also by PROCRASTINATE was my favorite track on this split. It starts off with eerily slow riffs before vocals and bass come crashing in and pick up the pace.
Dyspneia also by PROCRASTINATE is the next track. It starts off with a rather slow tempo but evolves into a cool song with some death growls and hardcore breakdowns. Parts of this track remind me of Jesus Piece and this song is worthy of a sick pit.
Procrastinate was formed in 2013 at Karditsa, Greece. At first, it was a project of two people in need to express themselves through extreme music and put out their ideas and beliefs. Later things got more serious and they became a five-piece and highly active group. they place themselves among the DIY hardcore punk scene and perform only in autonomous spaces and squats which promote an anti-authoritarian, anti-racist, anti-sexist and self-organized way of life. the lyrics draw inspiration from everyday life issues, social & political crisis, personal situations and ethics. Alot of times they have been described as metallic hardcore, crust-grind, crust punk, hardcore punk, but they are not really in that genres. It’s going to be the listener to decides.
Poison in the Well is the only track on this release from MYTERI, unless you purchase copies that will be available shortly after the Digital Release. Fast paced and with a similar vocal style to the band sharing this EP, MYTERI has a sound that that seems influenced by Amebix, Antisect, Wolfpack, Doom, Disfear,and IT Dies Today. Overall, this is a nice display of these bands’ distinct sounds and it is well worth the listen.
Myteri from Gothenburg, Sweden, play epic, soaring and heavy as fuck crust punk that will make you wanna raise your fist to the sky, get into your riot gear and start a full blown fucking riot. Myteri’s music evokes apocalyptic landscapes, torn apart by war, plague, misery, and famine, but their songs are not completely devoid of all hope. There is a shining light in this band’s music that seems to be almost incendiary, like a torch for survival. The last light of hope left in a world otherwise plunged into shadows. The only light left to find the way out of the misery mankind has pulled upon itself. Survivalism and freedom are huge conceptual elements in epic crust like this, and Myteri seem to really have wanted to emphasize this with their sapient use of epic d-beat gallops, war-torn vocals, and heavy, melodic riffing. Myteri’s debut full-length album is a sprawling and unforgiving opera of darkened heavy punk that draws much influence from legendary crust bands like Amebix, Antisect, Anticimex and Totalitar, and from head-on collision-like d-beat bands like Wolfpack, Doom and Disfear. But the real genetics of the band lie mostly in epic Spanish crust like Cop On Fire, Ictus, Ekkaia, and emo-crust in the vein of Remains of the Day etc., where the punk assault can be real, incumbent and heavy as fuck, but eerie melodies mostly coming from the guitars can also make the songs more luminous and atmospheric. In any case, this is a prime example of amazing melodic heavy crust – if you like Tragedy, this shit will clamp on to your soul and not let you go ever again.
