Crust punk developed from the meeting of anarcho-punk, hardcore and heavy metal in Britain during the 1980s. Amebix and Antisect are among the bands most often cited at the start of the style. Early crust drew on anarcho-punk and hardcore sources such as Crass and Discharge alongside metal and darker rock influences that included Motörhead, Venom and Black Sabbath. The scene also carries a strong political history around anarchism, anti-authoritarian ideas and forms of communal or marginal living.
Discordia emerged from the 1990s Tijuana crust and punk network. Brazilian band Undergust moved toward crust/grind after an eight-year recording gap, while one-person project Painist replaces the expected guitar and bass with a digital piano run through distortion pedals. AVL bring crust into sludge.
