As the calendar turns to June, we are ushered into the grand celebration of Black Music Month. Participating in this festivity, the Los Angeles-based band Zulu decided to pay their own unique tribute by unveiling two new tracks, recorded in collaboration with the Frequency x Spotify Singles initiative.
This revelation comes on the heels of the band’s recent critically appraised record, ‘A New Tomorrow‘, released via Flatspot Records this past March. What makes this contribution particularly intriguing is their approach to the selected tracks. First, they revisit “Shine Eternally,” an originally instrumental track from their latest album, endowing it with a deeper infusion of funk and jazz vibes, highlighted by the mellifluous vocal contribution of King Isis, a fellow artisan renowned for her genre-bending exploits.
In a rather audacious move, the second track features Zulu’s interpretation of Slipknot’s iconic “Wait And Bleed”. Embracing their distinctive heavy sound, the band managed to breathe new life into this revered classic, the palpable enthusiasm from the recording sessions adding a fresh layer of vitality to the well-known tune.
These songs, now available for streaming on Spotify, provide listeners with a glimpse into Zulu’s artistic perspective. They exemplify the band’s ability to harness the spirit of black music, while simultaneously fostering their own unique sound. In their hands, Black Music Month becomes an exploration of musical boundaries and an exhilarating expression of creativity, firmly embedding Zulu within this ever-evolving narrative.
Zulu will head out on a European and UK tour this week, including appearances at Outbreak Fest, 2000 Trees, and Jera On Air. A full list of upcoming tour dates can be found below.
