CREAK’s ‘Depth Perception’ – navigating metalcore emotion and atmospheric exploration

1 min read

Newcastle, UK, birthed a sonic exploration that has matured into the full-length debut of CREAK: ‘Depth Perception.’ With a soundscape that braids the raw aggression of metalcore, the starkness of hardcore, and the angst-filled anthems of nu-metal, the album also stitches in atmospheric textures reminiscent of horror video games and the unsettling artistry of David Lynch.

“It’s one of the biggest projects any of us have ever been involved in…” – Patrick Morton, CREAK guitarist

The musical terrain of ‘Depth Perception’ was carved out by four passionate souls who, initially, embarked on crafting a mere EP as a successor to 2020’s ‘Bitter Picture’. But when inspiration flows, it rarely trickles; the dam burst, and a cascade of ideas shaped this latest project. CREAK, with their foundation firmly in hardcore, has always showcased their affinity for sounds reminiscent of bands like Yüth Forever and Sworn In. Yet, with this album, they’ve unveiled unexpected avenues of creativity – Lynchian interludes, soul-stirring clean vocals, and metallic strands – adding depth and complexity to their established sound.

“There’s a piece of all of us in Depth Perception…” – Jack Dunn, Vocalist of CREAK

From the Abyss of Pain to the Peaks of Hope

The tracks that encapsulate ‘Depth Perception’ are not just songs but visceral renditions of human emotion. Jack Dunn, the voice behind the band’s visceral narrative, does not shy away from channeling his deepest turmoils into the lyrics. The harrowing journey of his mother’s battle with cancer led Dunn to confront a whirlpool of emotions, including guilt and sorrow. Using CREAK as a medium, Dunn articulated sentiments that were too dense to be conveyed in conversation. The result? ‘Depth Perception’ became an anthology that traverses the landscapes of dread, pain, mortality, and ultimately, hope.

“I was feeling guilty about my own emotions… trying to get to a point where I could try to become comfortable with them.” – Jack Dunn

Connor Sweeney, the man behind the buttons for 2020’s ‘Bitter Picture’, was entrusted again with the mammoth task of producing, mixing, and mastering. What emerged was a tantalizing live recording, echoing the raw fervor of CREAK’s onstage performances, and punctuating it with angular metalcore set amidst an unsettling sonic milieu brimming with restless vigor.

Depth Perception‘ is not merely an album, but a testimonial of four artists bearing their souls. With an indomitable spirit, CREAK stands poised, ready to shake the musical realms, offering listeners a poignant journey through the spectrum of human emotions. As they rise with unabated enthusiasm, they are undoubtedly on the cusp of becoming an irrefutable force in the industry.
