It’s time to mark your calendars and set your alarms, as Walk The Plank is all set to drop their new EP “Loathe” tomorrow, January 12th, 2024, through Mt. Crushmore Records.
This release is a big deal for the band, being their first fresh material since 2018’s “Void Treader” and their first entirely new material since 2017’s “Cemetery Vacation.”
As we dive into the details of “Loathe,” we’re not just looking at another EP; we’re entering the band’s emotional and social commentary.
Walk The Plank, after their tour in Mexico, began penning down this EP in summer 2019, and by early 2020, they were studio-bound. According to Alex Reimer, the band was oblivious to the looming pandemic, which makes the production of “Loathe” all the more serendipitous and significant.
Ian Crocker, immersed in the solitude of Washington D.C., channeled his observations and emotions into the lyrics.
“Death, hate, and sadness was everywhere,” he recalls, painting a stark picture of the environment that birthed “Loathe.”
The EP touches on themes as diverse and poignant as gun violence in “Good Guy With A Gun?” and the toxic apathy in failing relationships in “Boredom.”
“Closure” offers a more intimate glimpse into personal loss, while “Anti-Social Media” critiques our cultural obsession with online relevance. Then there’s “Dugout,” told from an abused dog’s perspective, adding another layer to the EP’s thematic richness.
Under the production expertise of Ben Green of Fairweather, “Loathe” marks the recording debut of band members Zeeshan Shad and John Crum.
Alex Reimer expresses his excitement about showcasing the new dynamics they bring to the band. This EP, as Reimer notes, is just a taste of what’s to come, hinting at a full album that hopefully won’t take another four years.
But the excitement doesn’t end with the EP’s release. Walk The Plank is all set to make a triumphant return to the stage with their first show in four years.
The record release show, happening on January 13th at Atlas Brew Works in Washington D.C., promises to be a fun event. Featuring special guests School Drugs, Supreme Commander, and PSYOP, this show is a not-to-be-missed occasion for fans and newcomers alike.
