Photo by Modern Guilt has capped off 2024 with a fierce statement: Do Not Panic, a debut EP building on the momentum of their 1000 Miles demo. Earlier this year, we caught their gritty spirit in our September piece, where bassist Thomas Lundin pointed to a harder, faster, and sometimes more melodic angle than their previous output.
Vocalist Peter Bader underlined the straight edge foundation and political thrust behind the band, emphasizing the EP’s main message to stay calm, do what you can, and nudge people to improve a chaotic world.
This new release adds to a colossal year of hardcore spanning continents, from Scandinavian mainstays like Problems, Sidestep, Tiebreak, Nowheres, and Sharp Tongues to global heavy-hitters such as The Hope Conspiracy, Burning Lord, No Idols, Forced Humility, Echo Chamber, and Collateral. In the midst of this surge, Lundin has assembled a personal list showcasing one crucial hardcore track for each year since 1979—45 official years that spill into a 46th, illustrating a consistent supply of raw energy.
“Some tracks made it in because of personal memories,” Lundin says. “Others felt indispensable.” The final list is both a reflection of his gut instincts and a testament to the avalanche of vital music that continues to flood the hardcore realm. He challenges listeners to debate and replace any tracks—spurring conversation about the genre’s constants and shifts.
, MODERN GUILTModern Guilt has a habit of curated selections. Their “45 Straight Edge Bangers” playlist, revealed back in May, was a rousing homage to the old-school spirit of Minor Threat and Youth of Today, combined with nods to their own scene, including Subject to Change and Division of Laura Lee.
They’ve carried that same do-it-yourself ethos into Do Not Panic, released jointly by Quarantined and Monument Records with two cover versions, a nod to the band’s wide reach and the Swedish hardcore community’s solidarity.
