Spearheaded by Steve Choi (known from RX BANDITS and THE SOUND OF ANIMALS FIGHTING) and Joe Vannucchi (FROM INDIAN LAKES), HARD CHILLER’s debut EP, “Heavy Cell,” unites a powerhouse of musical expertise with a fresh sonic direction. The EP also features Casey Deitz (THE VELVET TEEN) on drums and Roger Camero (THE WARRIORS, NO MOTIV) on bass, bolstering the band’s robust sound profile.
“Heavy Cell” dives into a mix of heavy riffs and ethereal melodies, constructing a landscape that’s as introspective as it is robust. The EP stands out for its ability to balance gritty, dense soundscapes with moments of clarity and lightness. Tracks like “Clouds” showcase this dual nature well, hinting at DEFTONES’ raw energy while weaving in more delicate, atmospheric touches.
Critics have been generally positive about the EP. Stereogum praised its DEFTONES-like vibe, noting its successful blend of harshness with melodicism. Flood Magazine highlighted the project as a playful yet significant collaboration, akin to an alt-rock version of Run the Jewels. Brooklyn Vegan pointed out the unexpected direction for Choi and Vannucchi, appreciating the heavier, spacey vibes.
The EP has seen some spotlight with features on ALT PRESS, Punk News, and it’s made appearances on Apple Music’s New In Rock Playlist, thanks to its distinct style. David Dean Burkhart also picked it up for his playlists, pushing it further into the view of alternative and indie rock fans.
“Heavy Cell” serves as a solid debut for Hard Chiller, positioning them as a band worth watching in the alternative scene. While it draws heavily from their roots, there’s enough new material here to give it a distinct edge. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s genuine and well-crafted, likely to draw in fans old and new.
The EP is out June 28th on Born Losers Records.
