Erode formed in Baltimore in 2022 and started out by releasing a self-titled EP, followed by a three-song promo a year later. Now the band is set to release “Devout” on July 18 via Daze, with tracking by Matt Redenbo at Magpie Cage, mixing by Andy Nelson at Bricktop, and mastering from Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.
The new single “Coiled,” available to stream today, is a clear preview of the album’s tone. Erode pulls from the bleakest corners of hardcore and metal, taking influence from 100 Demons, Morbid Angel, and Kickback.
The sound is immediately grim: vocals grind through each bar, guitars shift between crushing, stomping rhythms and discordant textures, and everything moves with a sense of tightly-wound tension. “Coiled” deals directly with the reality of finding connection through dysfunction. The band does not sidestep ugliness—lyrical themes across “Devout” are, as they put it, “overtly negative,” turning over topics like disillusionment, addiction, pride, and depravity.
The approach is straightforward and blunt, matched by the sound. The band points to the album’s darkness, especially in the way breakdowns are structured for maximum impact. “We wanted this record to hit like it’s falling apart and pulling you in at the same time,” Erode says. On “Coiled,” that intent is felt in the lyrics and the feel: “It’s about when the only bond you know is built out of dysfunction and everything starts to spiral.”
Erode’s lineup is Marc Dyer on vocals, Devon Lawless and Mike Hale on guitars, Kevin Cerda on bass, and Nick Thomas on drums.
“Devout” is out July 18, and preorders are up through Daze. The album features guest appearances from Putricine and Sinister Feeling.
