Conceptual gritty punk duo MILK FACTION comment on Censorship in Pop Culture, Pandemic and more!

6 mins read

Picture this, you wake up one morning and your loved ones are missing. There are government military vehicles driving all over your town and society is fresh out of freedoms. A purge, a jackboot on your neck, and a fright in your step are all too common now. To make matters worse, women have stopped producing breast milk; the nourishment of all earth like mammals. The government controls the formula and only they decide which children are worthy of life.

Each passing day the crime gets worse, people walk around in terror, and there’s no turning back. Bang! Bang! Bang! An unusually loud knock at your door goes unanswered, only to be followed by a splintering of wood, your front door is now on the ground. Single file they march into your house, dressed in all black, carrying what looks like thick wire cable with hooks attached to the ends. You’re forced into your favourite chair and thick brick like hands hold you down; what follows is indescribable.

What felt like a lightning bolt is shot into the base of your skull, your brain stem is forcefully connected, all the while you’re being told β€œit’s for your own good, don’t make me report you.” Let us never forget what this oppressive voice said next, β€œEnjoy your new connection, and enjoy the programming, now all night you can wade into reality.”

The Milk Faction is a conceptual noise punk duo with hard-core elements and is based out of Ontario, Canada; they are the resistance.

They are the resistance to our shame, and to our generational mistakes. These two grime studs make music for the short attention span. As retention numbers plummet and the thirst for Milk reaches an all-time high, these 1:40- 2:00 minute songs are designed to liberate and wage war; words are bullets.

On February 8th, The Milk Faction released their debut single β€˜#Resist’ to the world, followed by a bone crushing 7 track EP appropriately titled β€œ1%.” After all, the cream always rises to the top. Heaven or Hell- You decide.

MILK FACTION are a concept duo and their storyline is clearly fiction.

“Our first EP ‘1%’ is a 7 track storyline which is going to be accompanied by a 5 part animated mini series over the next year, as well as a fictional novel called The Milk Faction.” – explain Pete and Jonny. “We really think this duo can make a lot of noise as an arthouse project.”

Censorship in Pop Culture/ Art:

We have never lived in a more sensitive time in terms of “free speech.” We are walking on eggshells all the time as a society out of fear that the next opinion we express, political view, or nutritional view is going to somehow get us in trouble, attacked or cancelled.

Pete (MF-01) and Jonny (MF-02) know one thing to be true; it’s through difference of opinion, healthy debate, and uncomfortable conversations that we evolve as humans, and more importantly how societies around the world evolve. This band was formed after a dream Jonny had, he woke up repeating the words “Milk Faction,” and snapshots of said dream slowly returned.

What he remembered was that an oppressive “Faction,” or “Governing Body,” was controlling resources and oppressing the people in the dream, they were called the “Milk Faction.” Was this a reflection of the current daily life of our new Pandemic infused world? We could guess that it most certainly is.

Moreover, the lyrical content on Milk Factions debut EP “1%,” reflects this notion.

We were fearful from the start of this arthouse project we call Milk Faction of getting in trouble for the lyrics, or people attacking us over the aesthetic. We want this project to represent “free speech,” and “anti- censorship.”

We’re making incendiary, obnoxious, fast and heavy music with the goal of provoking people and we think that’s a healthy thing. We and any individual on this earth should be allowed to say what they feel or think, certainly a band, however, what we can’t control is if someone wants to debate what we’ve said or presented, or ridicule us, or flat out disagree and call us stupid.

The beautiful thing is, that’s ok too! We want the heat, we want the ridicule, and we want the debate. That’s free speech, that is true ouroboros. One last thing, for the record, why any civilian or musician or whoever would care so much about an opinion offered by Joe Rogan on any topic is flat out wrong and misguided, afterall, he used to make people eat cow testicles on Fear Factor. Priorities people.

We never thought we would live in a world where show too show there is just no knowing if it’s going to really happen. One second it’s on and the next; cancelled. This duo is largely a reflection of families and societies all around the world right now. Context, Pete and Jonny have different political views.

One member of the band is double vaxxed and the other is not and is against it, as we said like numerous families around the world. Those differences are, and should be ok! Not once have we let that affect our working relationship or creative relationship within the band, if anything, it makes us stronger as Milk Faction. Is it possibly disappointing that we could show up to a booked gig and be turned away because of the vaccine status of the full band? The short answer is, yes! But we would never make it a wedge issue in the duo or the touring makeup of the band, it just wouldn’t be healthy.

We need to respect each other and each other’s opinions and views, especially when it comes to injecting something into our bodies that was studied for less than a year, again; half the band is vaccinated. If only everyone would just drink a little more milk, tell each other how much we love one another, and share a cookie- life would be a little less inflammatory.

Opiate Awareness/ Overdoses/ Pandemic:

Jonny (MF-02) of Milk Faction used to be a heroin and fentanyl addict. He has been clean off those substances for 5 1/2 years and now works as an addictions counselor. There is no greater time to give a shit about this issue. It’s a public health crisis and it’s become an epidemic in the last two decades. In 2016 there were approximately 3, 000 opioid related deaths.

Between 2016- 2019 there were a reported 12, 800 opioid related deaths. More alarming, 1, 720 apparent opioid deaths occurred between April and June of 2021- 19 per day approximately (Government of Canada, 2021). That last figure is what we want to focus on, the problem isn’t getting better, it’s getting worse. Not only that, it’s been supercharged by the pandemic with it’s isolation based restrictions and it’s social distancing mandates.

π‘ƒπ‘™π‘Žπ‘–π‘› π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ π‘ π‘–π‘šπ‘π‘™π‘’, πΆπ‘Žπ‘›π‘Žπ‘‘π‘–π‘Žπ‘›π‘ ’ π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ π΄π‘šπ‘’π‘Ÿπ‘–π‘π‘Žπ‘›π‘ ’ π‘šπ‘’π‘›π‘‘π‘Žπ‘™ β„Žπ‘’π‘Žπ‘™π‘‘β„Ž π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ π‘ π‘’π‘π‘ π‘‘π‘Žπ‘›π‘π‘’ π‘π‘œπ‘›π‘ π‘’π‘šπ‘π‘‘π‘–π‘œπ‘› β„Žπ‘Žπ‘  π‘‘π‘œπ‘’π‘π‘™π‘’π‘‘ π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘–π‘π‘™π‘’π‘‘ 𝑖𝑛 π‘ π‘œπ‘šπ‘’ π‘π‘Žπ‘ π‘’π‘  𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘ π‘‘π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘‘ π‘œπ‘“ π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘π‘’π‘šπ‘–π‘.

This is scary because it’s not fully being addressed with the rigorous tenacity that lesser issues receive by the government and monetary donors.

Milk Faction makes music that supports this epidemic and they are trying to raise awareness through their music and at their shows by simply talking about it and being warriors in the fight to kill the stigma.
