How music can be a powerful platform for protest and discussion: introducing the art of ADPTD

2 mins read

ADPTD is composed of Josie Randle (Singer, Song-writer, Guitarist, Producer) a woman of color who is in fact, adopted with a story to tell. She has had the pleasure of collaborating with many friends and musicians globally as she has created this unique, emotive, alternative rock record in the Adptd Studio (aka bedroom). Her debut EP ‘Bedroom Walls’ truly reflects off the walls themselves and draws her ambient, yet heavy musical sound from a love of 2000s emo rock, top 40 hits, and many other current artist within the pop/rock, pop-punk, and hardcore scene.

Though Adptd may be a new project for her, she is no stranger to touring and being in a band as you may be familiar with her previous 3 piece Eye the Realist. With Adptd you can expect raw vulnerability with a focus on the deep feelings of anxiety, depression, political racism and how those experiences collectively impact one’s mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Comments Josie Randle, frontwoman of Adptd: “I remember the first time I felt an attachment to music was through an orchestra I saw and heard as a child watching PBS all the way to immersing myself in the likes of Pink Floyd to Green Day. From that moment on, music was all I wanted to do and experience. It took me to a place where I could just be me.”

“The way emotion is conveyed in music can stem from purely instrumental music to rock music and lyrics that tell a story, that can invoke emotion, or a perspective of a time in your life where you just relate to it so much it stays with you forever.”

β€˜Scared’ is a song off Adptd‘s upcoming album that not just speaks for Josie in the world of racial injustice, but hopefully everyone else that has an understanding of injustice and to see the need to stand up.

“The album β€˜Bedroom Walls’ is full of emotional thoughts that are expressed from heavy ambient melodic chorus to thought out verses.” – says Josie.

“Each song expresses my own feelings of self-reflection, faith and personal well beings to my perspective on dealing with loss. Each is relatable in it’s own way and I hope that whoever listens to any of the 7 songs can get something from it that invokes a movement of whatever stage of life you’re in.”

β€œBelieve It Or Not”, another track from the EP describes the labyrinth of emotions as Randle navigates the complexities of faith.

Randle’s unabashed approach to songwriting is evident as the song portrays her perspective on religion through the setting of a typical Sunday morning.

β€œBelieve it or Not is about my religious views and how skewed they are to me. I’m not here to knock religion or what anyone believes, because we all believe in something. The song is a very feely, touchy song that speaks about the push and pull of faith, the feelings that reside when you’re in worship vs when you’re not. It talks about the motion of an everyday Sunday. It can be a personal song for anyone who has any connection with religion and faith.” – comments Josie Randle.
