MOAFT is an instrumental rock band from Morąg, Poland – that’s the short version, but let their own words paint a picture of who they really are: “MOAFT is a musical creation that came into existence as a result of the only one of its kind mixture of experience and fascination of three individuals, who treasure the opportunity to share time and space together. The long-lasting and on the same time profound verbal endeavors to seek and find the ultimate sense in the Universe alternate with non-verbal battle against shortcomings of personal nature. MOAFT determines multiplicity of objectives, many a time seemingly trivial, the accomplishment of which enables them to sate and quench the beast of bear-like characteristics.” You get it? No? The band’s 2012 track “Osttek” was released on the first part of Lights and Air compilation, the first Polish post rock / post metal collaboration release presented by Post-rock PL. The featuring you’re checking out right now is one of the last parts of the exclusive series of Lights & Air interviews that gives you a chance to take a closer look at most of the bands involved in the project.
[EN] Hello gentlemen! I don’t know if you that, but you’ve just entered the closing phase group of bands telling their story in the “Lights And Air” IDIOTEQ.com / Post-Rock PL collaborative series :) Are you ready to begin your confession? ;) What’s up?
[PL] Witam Panów! Nie wiem czy wiecie, ale dołączyliście do zacnego grona zamykającego naszą kolaboracyjną serię wywiadów IDIOTEQ.com / Post-Rock PL :) Jesteście gotowi na małą spowiedź? ;) Co słychać?
[EN] It is indeed a great pleasure for us, we will share our thoughts with alacrity but unfortunately we can’t guarantee that all of the sins we have committed will be atoned.
What’s up? We decided to have a short break cause we had a lot of different stuff to do in September. We have been buckling up the material designed to appear on our album, after that we had done some pre-production, and went back to fumble at the stuff once again, in order to record it in the end. We had also had an opportunity to gig a little bit, and that’s more or less everything… Fortunately, the temporary lack of activity is going to end very soon, because we are planning to begin working again in the near future.
[PL] Jest nam niezmiernie miło i chętnie się wyspowiadamy, choć nie gwarantujemy, że za wszystkie grzechy będziemy jakoś żałować :)
Co słychać? hmmm…w tym momencie robimy sobie akurat krótką przerwę, bo praktycznie do końca września byliśmy mocno zajęci. Dopinaliśmy materiał na naszą płytę, potem robiliśmy małą przedprodukcję, po czym znów trochę grzebaliśmy w tym materiale, by go w końcu nagrać. Udało się też zagrać trochę koncertów…i to tak z grubsza. Na szczęście chwilowy brak działań dobiega końca, bo za chwilę zabieramy się znów do pracy.
[EN] Alright, very cool, we’ll get through all of this right away. I wouldn’t like to start with trivial questions, but I’m dying of curiosity. How did you come up with such a great name as MOAFT?
[PL] Ok, super, zaraz o tym wszystkim na pewno pogadamy. Nie chciałbym zaczynać od takich trywialnych kwestii, ale niestety zżera mnie ciekawość. Skąd wytrzasnęliście tak zacne słowo jak MOAFT?
[EN] It is tremendously significant for all of us – the sense of existence in the current space-time continuum, both in personal dimension and the inside-band correlation. And that’s that as far as explaining difficult matters is concerned. The verbatim meaning is given only when particular circumstances occur, although everything is transparent on its own and in its time. For now, we would like to stand for such a conviction.
[PL] MOAFT to dla nas coś ogromnie ważnego, to w pewnym stopniu sens funkcjonowania w obecnej czasoprzestrzeni , zarówno w sferze osobistej jak i wewnątrz zespołowej. I na tym właściwie powinniśmy poprzestać w kwestii wyjaśniania. Dosłowne znaczenie ujawnimy dopiero wtedy, gdy zaistnieją odpowiednie ku temu czynniki, ale wtedy wszystko może stać się jasne samoczynnie… Póki co zostaniemy strażnikami tego znaczenia :)
[EN] Alright, I won’t ask you on the details then :) How did you manage to discover that sharing time and space together serves you so well? :) Tell me about your beginnings and origins. Do you all come from the same area?
[PL] Ok, nie dopytuję zatem :) Jak odkryliście to, że przebywanie w tym samym miejscu i czasie służy Waszej zgranej trójcy? :) Powiedzcie coś o początkach Waszej działalności i Waszym geograficznym pochodzeniu. Wszyscy pochodzicie z tych samych stron?
[EN] Not necessarily harmonious, but constant searching for meeting half-way and learning how to overcome weaknesses, is what makes us going. The more difficult it is, the more satisfied we are. The beginning of band’s cooperation is rather average. Three guys meet, chat, want to try something completely new. At some point they begin to materialize their ideas. Before we decided to present ourselves to anybody, three years of underground rehearsals in many different places had passed. On our Pogesanian homeland, which tortuous routes, thick forests and multitude of wildlife, made us practice a bit less than talk about things that caused a headache. We took the risk of making the project public not before October 30th, and this year we celebrated our third birthday anniversary. It’s still the beginning for the band, the process of learning new things and getting to know one another more thoroughly.
We hope that everything’s still there for us …
[PL] Chyba nie koniecznie zgranej, ale poszukiwanie kompromisów i uczenie się jak przezwyciężać własne słabości sprawia, że chce nam się działać. Tym samym im ciężej, tym większą czujemy motywację…Jeśli chodzi o początki naszej działalności to są one dość klasyczne. Trzy jednostki spotykają się , rozmawiają, chcą czegoś wspólnie spróbować…Z czasem nadają temu jakiś konkretniejszy kształt, z tym wyjątkiem, że zanim zdecydowaliśmy pokazać się światu, to jakieś 3 lata spotykaliśmy się potajemnie w różnych miejscach. Głównie na naszej rodzinnej pogezańskiej ziemi, której uroda krętych dróg, gęstych lasów i mnogości dzikiej zwierzyny, sprawiała że trochę graliśmy a więcej rozmawialiśmy na tematy, które w konsekwencji przyprawiały o ból głowy. Dopiero potem zaryzykowaliśmy upublicznienie i 30 października minęła trzecia rocznica naszych narodzin…dla nas to ciągle początek, etap uczenia się, docierania…
Wszystko zatem przed nami…
[EN] Do you have a certain direction you are heading towards?
[PL] Macie jakiś obrany punkt, do którego dążycie?
[EN] We are convinced that it is impossible to determine such an aim. The inner must of self-development won’t let us do something like this. It is all about the fact that we would like to get more satisfaction from playing in our band, perform better in concerts, develop skills, create music that could help us feel more content at the end of the day.
[PL] Jesteśmy przekonani że takiego punktu nie można ostatecznie określić. Nasza wewnętrzna potrzeba rozwoju nam na to nie pozwoli :) Chodzi przede wszystkim o to by w kwestiach zespołowych osiągać większą satysfakcję, czy to grając lepsze koncerty, czy to doskonaląc warsztat, czy też tworząc rzeczy, pozwalające z poczuciem spełnienia kończyć dzień…
[EN] Alright, so let’s discuss your legacy. The song you’ve decided to release on “Lights And Air” compilation comes from your lats year’s split release with POKRAK and MONROE’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH. How did you team up for that album? Would you mind introducing both bands for our readers?
[PL] Ok, porozmawiajmy więc o Waszej spuściźnie. Ten kawałek przeznaczony na Lights And Air pochodzi z Waszego zeszłorocznego splitu z POKRAKiem i MONROE’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH. Jak doszło do tej współpracy? Przedstawicie czytelnikom te 2 bandy?
[EN] POKRAK is a pretty awesome band, creating heavy, mysterious and climatic music at the same time. Our ways met, we liked spending time together and as a result started a cooperation in many different fields. MONROE’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH is the best example – the spontaneous creation, which essence is to generate energy, without the banality of thought and word. No conspiratorial theories. Hence, the name… Equally spontaneous was the idea of a split that was prepared very quickly as a result of our mutual acquaintance and tour nee. The record was released by Green Lungs Records – another example of Moaft and Pokrak’s interaction. We would like to invite anyone interested in our activity to get to know a little bit more about POKRAK and MMD in their spare time.
[PL] POKRAK to genialny zespół, grający ciężarną i jednocześnie tajemniczą i klimatyczną muzykę. Nasze drogi pewnego dnia się skrzyżowały, polubiliśmy się, a konsekwencją tego była chęć współpracy…na różnych płaszczyznach…MONROE’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH jest tego najlepszym przykładem. Spontaniczny twór którego istotą jest generowanie energii, bez zbędnego myślenia i mówienia…żadnych teorii spiskowych…stąd pewnie ta przewrotna nazwa… Równie spontaniczny był pomysł splitu, który bardzo szybko został przygotowany z okazji naszej wspólnej trasy a wydany nakładem Green Lungs Records, kolejnego owocu naszego wzajemnego na siebie oddziaływania… :) Zachęcamy serdecznie do zapoznania się POKRAKiem i MMD :)
[EN] Was the „Vana Imago” EP (also on Green Lung Records) recorded after that? Do you have any other releases?
[PL] Czy Wasza debiutancka EP, „Vana Imago” (również Green Lung Records) była wydana później? Macie jeszcze jakieś inne wydawnictwa na koncie?
[EN] The split with POKRAK – MMD – and Vana Imago saw the light of the day in the same time even though there was a two-year difference in creating both projects. The second of the mentioned ventures was created no longer than a month after MOAFT started its existence, but for some reason the material designed for the album had to stay ‘under the surface’ for almost two years. It is quite typical a feature that we don’t feel the need to hurry, for we are simply lazy. On the other hand, the fact that the split didn’t take very long to become existing, can be treated as a kind of contradiction, well, exception proves the rule. We prepared the stuff almost at the same moment we shared our ideas, recorded it in jig time, and after a month or so, we could hold the completed album in our hands. GLR is the one and only label that we have, but not for long…
[PL] Właściwie split z Pokrakiem/MMD i Vana Imago ukazały się w tym samym czasie, choć powstawały w dwuletnim odstępie. Vana Imago to materiał zarejestrowany dosłownie miesiąc po naszych narodzinach, ale przeleżał w “szufladzie” blisko dwa lata…to właściwie dość typowe dla nas, że pracujemy bez pośpiechu, leniwie. Choć z drugiej strony, split był tego chwilowym zaprzeczeniem, bo powstał spontanicznie. Utwory przygotowaliśmy od razu gdy pojawił sie pomysł, zaraz potem je zarejestrowaliśmy i miesiąc później trzymaliśmy płytę w ręku… póki co to nasze jedyne wydawnictwa…ale już niedługo :)
[EN] Green Lung Records… What kind of label is that and how did you start your cooperation?
[PL] Green Lung Records… Cóż to za label i jak doszło do Waszej współpracy?
[EN] We aren’t sure whether the term ‘cooperation’ is a good word. We create and live for each other, I’m talking about the bands of course. We needed a tool of some kind, so we built it from scratch. In other words, the GLR was created in order to enable us to support ourselves, but today we are quite certain that we are going to help other formations as well, but everything will be revealed in its own good time.
[PL] Nie jesteśmy pewni czy “współpraca” to dobre słowo… My się wzajemnie kreujemy i żyjemy w pewnym sensie dla siebie. Potrzebowaliśmy “narzędzia”, więc je stworzyliśmy od podstaw.
Innymi słowy, założyliśmy label by wspierać swoje działania, ale dziś praktycznie wiemy, że będziemy też wspierać innych… ale wszystko w swoim czasie.
[EN] Cool :) What I’ve read in reviews of your music, it seems that people judge your work quite appropriately. Progressive, stoner, hard-rock, HELMET, TOOL and other inspirations – it’s all there, indeed. But how do YOU guys like to call your music? Do you have your own original terms for it? :)
[PL] Fajnie :) Z recenzji Waszej muzyki można wyczytać w sumie to co słychać, czyli progressive, stoner, hard-rock, HELMET, TOOL i inne inspiracje, które są oczywiste. A jak Wy lubicie nazywać to co gracie? Macie jakieś swoje wewnętrzne oryginalne określenia? :)
[EN] Everything that is good from our point of view inspires us and blends into what we do. If it’s easier for somebody to understand us after these words, so be it. Our attitude towards what people think about us is rather lukewarm. Out of spite we’ve made up the term: ‘ the regressive alternative’.
[PL] Inspirujemy się wszystkim co dobre w naszym mniemaniu i poszczególne elementy oczywiście przenikają w naszą twórczość. Jeśli przez to komuś łatwiej jest nas postrzegać to ok. Generalnie mamy o tego obojętny stosunek…, choć z przekory wymyśliliśmy termin “alternatywa regresywna” :)
[EN] Watching your live clips, I just can’t help the feeling that there is still a lot of room for jam, jazz and even funk in your music! Do you happen to do some crazy jammin’ like this? A lot of your video prove that you like to improvise.
[PL] Ja tu słyszę, szczególnie oglądając Wasze klipy z występów na żywo, sporo niezagospodarowanego pola na jam i jazz, a nawet funk! Szalejecie czasami na próbach w tych kierunkach? Bo wiele smaczków z koncertów dowodzi, że lubicie improwizację.
[EN] We like improvising but only at the stage of creation. Most of the pieces were made in such a way. We treat what we do as a form of a job, not as entertainment. We have to admit that we lack the ability to avert our attention from this point of view, but at the same time we like changing and improving our opuses. The live version of the tracks may differ from the recorded ones. Sometimes we maneuver, add a citation, but it’s always done after rehearsing it in the studio.
[PL] Lubimy improwizację, ale wtedy gdy coś tworzymy. Wiele z naszych utworów wzięło się takiego swobodnego jamowania, jeśli nie większość. Dla nas jednak jest to bardziej forma pracy niż zabawy…brakuje nam jeszcze umiejętności by odwrócić te proporcje, ale na pewno lubimy coś zmieniać w naszych utworach. Wersje koncertowe mogą się różnić od form zarejestrowanych. Czasem coś zakombinujemy, czasem wpleciemy jakiś cytat, jednak zawsze jest to wynik wcześniejszego wyćwiczenia na próbach.
[EN] Ok.. it’s time to get to the stuff that we love the most – playing shows! Do you perform a lot? Was this year plentiful for gigs? How was your September run?
[PL] Ok.. czas na to co misie lubią najbardziej – granie na żywo! Dużo koncertujecie? Ten rok mieliście obfity jeśli chodzi o występy na żywo? Jak udała się Wasza wrześniowa mini-trasa?
[EN] We would like to give as many concerts as possible because it’s the best form of developing our skills. We aren’t able to lie to anybody when we play live music, we’re always nervous, have technical problems with our equipment, and on the same time feel the great energy generated and released into the circulation, if we may say so. In our opinion we could of course give more concerts because plenty is not plague, but it is always connected to leaving our ‘lairs’, everyday activities, and some more aspects of ‘normal life’ behind, which doesn’t necessarily help us. The tour nee with NOYE in September occurred to be a great form of spending our time. That is why we can’t wait for other opportunities to appear someday. By the way, we have to mention that we have a chance to perform with really great bands, make friends with these guys, and that is why we are proud and glad. We want more of that stuff, I mean it ;)
[PL] Koncertów chcielibyśmy grać jak najwięcej i na pewno będziemy do tego dążyć, gdyż jest to dla nas najdoskonalsza forma rozwijania się. Na żywo nikogo nie oszukujemy, zawsze jesteśmy stremowani, często się mylimy, mamy jakieś techniczne problemy, ale jednocześnie czujemy też że przechodzi przez nas mnóstwo energii i chcielibyśmy się nią dzielić w jak największym stopniu. Czy dużo gramy? Naszym zdaniem , na pewno za mało :) Ale granie koncertów związane jest opuszczaniem na jakiś czas swoich legowisk, zostawianiem codziennych obowiązków, które spadają na innych i jeszcze kilka innych aspektów , które sprawiają, że nie jest to takie proste. Wrześniowa trasa z NOYE, ale też każda inna okazja na koncerty, okazywała się dla nas idealną forma spędzania czasu, dlatego nie możemy się doczekać kolejnych możliwości. Przy okazji mamy to szczęście, że krzyżujemy nasze drogi z świetnymi zespołami, z którymi później się zaprzyjaźniamy co też uważamy za wyjątkową sprawę…dlatego chcemy grać , grać i jeszcze raz grać :)
[EN] What are your future plans?
[PL] Jakie plany na przyszłość?
[EN] We hope to finish the production of the full-length debut material, under the supervision of the right and honorable Piotr Polak. We are planning to draw everything to a close next spring. We will give as many concerts as possible so that we can better the music that we do. We would like to invite everyone to take part in one of our gigs that are going to take place this year too.
[PL] Na pewno będziemy kończyć produkcję pełnowymiarowego debiutu , którego nagrywanie rozpoczeliśmy we wrześniu pod okiem, uchem, zmysłem i palcami Piotra Polaka. Na wiosnę chcielibyśmy mieć już to wszystko za sobą i móc pokazać światu efekt. Materiał na pewno będziemy ogrywać na żywo i postaramy się to robić tak często jak tylko się da. A do końca roku mamy zaplanowane jeszcze 3 koncerty, na które serdecznie zapraszamy.
[EN] Ok, so before we say goodbye… In your bio, you’re stating that you seek and find the ultimate sense in the Universe. Is it just a funny stop-gap, or are you really into space? :)
[PL] Ok, to jeszcze zanim się pożegnamy… W swoim bio piszecie, że szukacie sensu we Wszechświecie. To tekst z parafii „zapchaj-dziur”, czy naprawdę interesujecie się kosmosem? :)
[EN] Not literally…’the Universe’ is of course a metaphor.
[PL] Nie dosłownie …”Wszechświat” to raczej metafora…
[EN] Too bad, we could discuss nebulas and supernovas ;) Alright gents. Thanks a lot for your time! Any last words? :)
