Oslo experimental psych rock duo BURNING MOTHERFUCKERS premieres “No Teeth”, discusses artwork, new album

Get ready to dive into the world of Burning Motherfuckers, a drums and bass experimental rock duo hailing from the heart of Oslo. Their second album is set to release on August 25th under the esteemed Hærverk Industrier label. As an exclusive treat, we are premiering their new track, titled “No Teeth,” which offers a glimpse into the raw and unconventional soundscapes that define the band’s unique musical style.

No Teeth” showcases Burning Motherfuckers’ prowess in creating an eclectic experience. The track’s artwork, a hand-drawn piece, mirrors the chaotic nature of their music, evoking a sense of eerie fascination. The band commented on the artwork, stating, “Your guess is as good as mine as to what the drawing is about. It’s all going round and round. 40 years and still a child, but millions of years old in truth, if there is such a thing.”

Delving into the origins of the artwork, the band explained that it was one of the first drawings created in 2020, during a period of personal exploration and artistic growth. The influence of psychedelics is evident in their other drawings from that time, but this particular piece was crafted with a sober mind.

Burning Motherfuckers’ upcoming album, slated for release later this year, was recorded live in Øystein’s and his partner’s studio in Berlin back in 2018. Embracing the limitations of their setup, Øystein did most of the technical sound work as best as he could. Employing SM58 microphones and an old AT822 for overheads, the band achieved an impressive sound that was later refined through the mixing prowess of Christian Næss and the mastering skills of Lasse Marhaug.

A couple of years down the line, Burning Motherfuckers found themselves recording their third album with Nikolai Gabriel at Jæløya. The recording sessions began on January 2nd, 2022. The band was situated in an old blacksmith workshop that had been transformed into a studio, located at the tip of a half-island. From the window, they could catch glimpses of the ocean, surrounded by farmland, horses, and stone walls reminiscent of Postman Pat mixed with an old painting of treasure island.

During their week in the studio, Burning Motherfuckers dedicated considerable time to perfecting the sound within the space. Nikolai, renowned for his wizardry in sound engineering, meticulously set up sound barriers in the roof to ensure optimal acoustics. The band was delighted to have access to a remarkable array of equipment, including a selection of exceptional microphones, some dating back to the 1940s.

Recording vocals live posed a unique challenge, requiring the exploration of different techniques while maintaining the band’s signature high energy levels. Ultimately, a solution was found by incorporating PA speakers to break through the sound barriers and capture the desired intensity.

No Teeth,” the track we’re premiering above, emerged as a spontaneous jam during the early days of the recording session. Inspired by the breathtaking view of the sea outside the studio window, the lyrics evoke a sense of intrigue and curiosity. As the band expressed, “Granny with no teeth, I really don’t know, but stuff happens.”
