Powerviolence band ZULU sign to Flatspot Records, share “Straight From Da Tribe Of Tha Moon” music video

1 min read

Los Angeles powerviolence band ZULU has signed with thriving hardcore label Flatspot Records, who will release the band’s debut EP Our Day Will Come (2019) and its follow-up My People…Hold On (2020) on vinyl for the first time. The 12” pressing is available now on transparent yellow vinyl and a more limited ultra-clear vinyl via Flatspot Records’ webstore.

To celebrate the occasion, the band has shared a music video for track “Straight From Da Tribe Of Tha Moon.” Clocking in at just over a minute, the song features crushing guitars and an assertive vocal attack, while the video is a nod to LA hip-hop culture.

As vocalist Anaiah Lei puts it – “I really just wanted to make a cool video with low riders and a gang of homies posted up. On some LA-type business, truthfully taking it back to old school.”

Formed by vocalist Anaiah Lei (also of hardcore band DARE) in 2019, Zulu is rounded out by Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar), Satchel Brown (bass), and Christine Cadette (drums). Citing influences from Jill Scott to Weekend Nachos, the band’s style is fiercely original laced with heavy breakdowns intertwined with samples of pivotal moments in black culture. The band will be heading out on a West Coast tour this summer with fellow California innovators Scowl and Sweet Soul, dates for which can be found below.

“Hard as nails production, vocals that will strip the paint off a tank, and a video that reminds us that heavy music is supposed to be fun goddamnit. The latest from LA powerviolence band Zulu is a minute and change of blissful intensity.” – AFROPUNK
