Russian heavy post rockers SHOW ME A DINOSAUR refill blackgaze with a renewed radiance on new opus “Plantgazer”

December 18, 2020
4 mins read

Born from someone locked inside his home, gazing at his house plants day in day out and trying to figure out answers to the many questions this new world has given rise to,”Plantgazer” from SHOW ME A DINOSAUR is a monumental album that’s both melancholic and powerful. Alternately spectral and overwhelming, the record offers hugely entertaining experimentation and unconventional musical disassembly within a set of genres that are not the easiest to digest. Born from the hope of breaking through a growing anxiety, “Plantgazer” maintains a sonic ferocity unmatched by many blackgaze contemporaries. We are honored and super excited to give you a special breakdown of each and every track from this masterpiece, brought to you by the band vocalist Artem himself.

Show Me a Dinosaur is a 4-piece heavy post-rock blackgaze band from Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation. The band made several European and Russian tours and performed at notable festivals such as Lithuanian Devilstone and Norwegian Vivid.

“Plantgazer” was released digitally and physically on 4th December on all platforms.

What’s left to a someone locked down alone with their thoughts on a warm sunny day.
Just gazing at house plants day in day out and trying to figure out answers to the many questions this new world has given rise to.

Words by the band’s lyricist Artem:

Sunflower

Shoegaze opener. We wanted to make some kind of dance track but with black-ish vocals since we always like to mix things up.
Lyric-wise this track is a good representation of the way I feel about myself and our music. I am always torn between the urge to speak about everything that bothers me and the feeling of uselessness of such an act since the buzz around is already too loud.

Why scream?
My voice is drowning in the choir
But how can I keep silent?
The earth around me is on fire.

Under the light of lifeless stars
We will be burned down
Under the light of lifeless stars
We will be burned down

Under the light of lifeless stars
We will be burned down
Under the light of lifeless stars
We will be burned down

A fire inside is still burning
Fire it up, fire it up brighter

Marsh

Lyrics for this track were written under an impression of what was happening in Belarus this summer. People stood for themselves against the last dictator in Europe despite the threat to their lives. And they still continue to fight. Since we have a very close political situation in Belarus and Russia I took these events very close to heart.

We bear the burden, captured by mortal love.
We wait until the seeds of doubt grow,
Until the march of thousands of feet and the smoke of fires
Scream about the new age.
Like the sun on a frosty day
Like a scream from afar
Like a flare amongst the billion of stars
We are staying here.

We are staying here forever
We are staying here forever
We are staying here forever
We are staying here forever
We are staying here forever
We are staying here forever

Red River

This one is the most tragic track on the album. And there are no words for a reason.
We have a very scary situation in Russia with numerous ecological disasters happening every year. The situation with the river Daldykan which is close to Norilsk City is one of them. It’s not the first time the river turns red from all the spills of diesel from the nearby Norilsk Nickel factory. Water even became flammable. It feels like it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what is happening everywhere.

Selva

Selva is a tropical forest. It’s a home for many living creatures. Their shelter. So the track is about a shelter which everyone should have. About a place where you can return to after a day in a hostile world and just rest and heal your wounds.

Flames in the darkness.
The sky is flooded
With crimson light
It’s crushing me down.
Save yourself, run away.
The woods are screaming.

Broken by a ruthless day
I go through a flock of black leaves.
I go to the place where warmth awaits
Where blunt pain will leave me

Grey moss covers my home
Dirty smoke rushing from the pipes
I lay near you like a wounded dog
And this pain disperses like an echo

Unsaid I

One of the loudest track beginnings we’ve ever had. It has mostly post-black tricks but I believe that the whole mood is more like a “desperate dream” in the beginning which turns to a more calm and easy-listen closer to the end.
The track is about the understanding and acceptance of the idea that not all questions are to be answered and about ageing in general.

At the bottom of the glass just the taste of disappointment
Where is the sun which warmed us just dark clouds left
I bury myself in the grey silk of skies
I run from the black lungs of these filthy streets
But always return

I was seeking for an answer in the faces of passersby, in reflections of puddles
I was seeking for an answer in someone’s window, in a whisper of wind
But I didn’t succeed.

Hum

And here we turned back to our shoegaze side.
This is a song about the creeping unreasonable anxiety which comes from time-to-time at night. It is about all the thoughts you always try to run from, but they always catch up with you.

It’s night again
And I cannot fall asleep
The hum of thoughts keeps me awake
Shadows of past days run around
It’s getting harder to breathe
The heartbeat is getting louder

The gaping hole from rib to rib
I’m bleeding with spring
My last breath is full of you
I’m bleeding with spring

Unsaid II

The closing track. Enough said, it is just the outro to the album to headbang one last time before it ends.
