Death metal grew out of the most extreme end of thrash during the late 1980s. Heavy distorted riffing, growled vocals and sharp tempo changes became part of its early vocabulary. Death helped define the form, while Morbid Angel and Obituary were among the bands that made Florida one of its major early centres.
The IDIOTEQ archive often meets death metal where it collides with hardcore. Disposal connect HM-2 death metal with beatdown and Barcelona hardcore, Carving Void sit directly between death metal and metallic hardcore, and Spinebreaker explicitly connect 1990s death metal with hardcore. Kontusion take a darker contemporary route.
Solo project Brec Destroyer moves toward deathcore, while Nic Heidt’s solo project Grave Generator uses synth-driven production. Dystopiate reduce the setup to a two-piece.
