Post-metal uses metal’s weight inside longer, more open structures. Heavy riffs can arrive through repetition and gradual builds, with clean guitar, ambience, noise and quieter passages changing how the next heavy section lands. Sludge, doom, post-rock, post-hardcore and experimental music all feed different parts of the style.

Its 1990s foundations are strongly tied to Neurosis and Godflesh. Neurosis moved out of a hardcore and crust background toward texture and dynamics on “Souls at Zero”, with “Through Silver in Blood” becoming an especially important reference. Godflesh brought another route through industrial metal, repetition and expanded structure.

IDIOTEQ’s own coverage shows several contemporary branches. Italy’s Viscera/// pull psychedelia into the picture. Cantabria’s Eretia connect post-metal directly with post-hardcore across four long pieces. Warsaw’s Carrion Sky come from musicians previously active in Black Tundra, Major Kong and Chainsword, while Haifa’s NUR push toward blackened sludge and hardcore.

IDIOTEQ (pronounce “idiotec”) is a phonetic transcription of the word Idioteque – the act of suddenly going into a crazy, seizure like state. A vision of a society, where people are increasingly more obsessed with pointless technology, selfishness and mindless entertainment than life itself.
