Powerviolence came out of fast hardcore on the US West Coast around the late 1980s and early 1990s. Songs can be extremely short, built around bursts of speed, abrupt tempo changes and hard drops into slower sections.

The name itself grew inside that network. Chris Dodge of Slap A Ham traced power violence back to the Neanderthal “Fighting Music” record and the circle around Matt Domino and Eric Wood. Infest, Crossed Out, Man Is the Bastard, No Comment and later Spazz became central reference points as the community took shape, with Slap A Ham and Fiesta Grande helping connect many of the bands.

Recent IDIOTEQ coverage follows the form through different local scenes. Oakland’s Lana Dagales finally issued an abandoned LP two decades later, Philadelphia’s Blunt Force bring the style into current hardcore, and Oslo’s Tæl reduce the setup to bass and drums. Odd Limbs and Choke take other routes through fast hardcore and grind-adjacent writing.

The political and DIY side remains visible too. Travølta connect a new split with protest and pressures inside DIY culture.

IDIOTEQ (pronounce “idiotec”) is a phonetic transcription of the word Idioteque – the act of suddenly going into a crazy, seizure like state. A vision of a society, where people are increasingly more obsessed with pointless technology, selfishness and mindless entertainment than life itself.
