SEERESS returns with ‘Holograms’: a stark ode to societal illusions and the power of awareness

1 min read

Just a few weeks after shaking the pillars of the sludgy post-hardcore / post-metal scene with “Fear,” Seeress is back to challenge perceptions once again with their latest track, “Holograms.” The song is a fresh slice of their signature sound, a blend of metallic post-hardcore and blackgaze, laced with the emotive power of classical string instruments.

“Holograms” resonates with a message as old as society itself, examining the idea that to those at the helm, we are mere specters, distractions—holograms to the powers that be. Seeress articulates a bleak inheritance of “shuttered shopping malls and poisoned rivers,” a sentiment that mirrors the disquiet of our times, as the “all seeing eye of our surveillance state watches on in laughter and mirth.”

Yet, within this stark portrayal, there’s a glimmer of constructive defiance. “But just to be able to become aware and talk about these things feels at least a little constructive, in the face of all that direness,” the band reflects on the underlying message of “Holograms.”

The track is both a warning and an invitation: a call to wake up to the distortions and deceptions within our society.

Seeress

Musically, “Holograms” sees Seeress continuing to expand their auditory exploration. The guitars weep and wail, emulating the piercing melancholy of violins and cellos against the backdrop of a bass and drum section that “pounds like anxious hearts.” This track maintains the band’s tradition of sonic evolution, blending the heavy with the ethereal, the aggressive with the delicate.

This new offering was sculpted in the studio with the same trusted hands that have shaped their sound in the past. Recorded by Jim Wirt and mastered by Alan Douches—both described by the band as “absolute gangsters” in their craft—”Holograms” promises to be another testament to Seeress’s ever-growing legacy.

Accompanying the release is a music video shot by Fierce Beard Films at Cleveland’s renowned punk spot, No Class. The video captures the essence of the track, encapsulating the energy and raw spirit of the venue and everyone involved. It features a piano with a storied past, a relic imbued with both beauty and the scars of betrayal, now given over to the flames—an act that visually encapsulates the song’s themes of destruction and renewal.

As Seeress continues to carve their path through the “shitstorm wasteland” with their upcoming album ‘Empathy,’ “Holograms” stands as a powerful addition to their discography. It’s a song that seeks to rattle the listener, to stir a collective consciousness, and to remind us that empathy might just be the key to navigating the chaos of the modern world.
