Blackgaze joins the abrasion and blast-beat intensity of black metal with the sustained guitar texture and melody associated with shoegaze. Alcest became an early reference for the form, while bands such as Deafheaven helped carry it into a wider audience. Post-rock and post-hardcore run through plenty of it as well, which is why the edges have never been firm.
Ebdromeer released “Leper” in March 2026 out of Almaty, a first public statement and, in the band’s words, a first attempt to show their emotions to people. Thought Trials turned from earlier post-rock toward something heavier on “Earthrise / Gaia”, pulling in screamo. Danish quartet A Horrible Death To A Horrible Man came at it from blackened shoegaze on “First Light”, Dutch band Noctambulist let post-punk into “Aderlater”, and Nordsind keep it instrumental.
