“I’m not even with you- and still you control me”. These lines precede the climax of the song, and pull you into the depression nest that is “Emptied Out”. London, Ontario based JUNKO DAYDREAM forgoes the optimism of their previous release “Don’t Go Down” and navigates the darker regions of the human experience.
Pulling from a well of cleverly tamed emotions, “Emptied Out” builds from melancholy verses to raging choruses before it unleashes an assault on your emotions with a final half that will either leave you calling your ex in the middle of the night to apologize or patting yourself on the back for finally calling it quits.
In his featured verse, King Cruff expands on Junko’s lyrical themes and explores how relationships change as you become more successful as an artist.
Asked about this unique collaboration with Jamaican-Canadian rapper King Cruff (also based out of London), the band offered: “We think his music is incredible, and that his verse in the song really showcases his talent. “
“We’re good friends and have played his shows as his backing band in the past. We’re honoured he was willing to feature on “Emptied Out” and love that genre fusion Cruff’s feature creates.”The marriage of emo and hip-hop this song exhibits calls back to the Punk Goes Pop days of old, and may be the most successful marriage anybody Junko has ever experienced.
This is the third song recorded with Scott Middleton (formerly of Cancer Bats), exploring the feelings and emotional turmoil that you struggle with after breaking off a long-term relationship.
For this song’s music video, we collaborated with London videographer, Sevi Ferguson. We wanted the video for “Emptied Out” to act as a visual representation of the pain that accompanies the loss of a loved one.
Expect more collaborations with other artists in the future as the band records more tracks with their Producer, Scott Middleton. Also, be sure to catch them live at the following stops in Canada:
Oct. 28 London, ON Rum Runners
Oct. 31 Hamilton, ON The Doors
Nov. 5 Montreal, QC The Traxide
Nov. 6 Quebec City, QC L’Anti
Lyrics:
[Junko]
I wailed like a baby
That day you saved me from us
And living with you until I turned to dust
because you got me good
You got me good
You got me
[King Cruff]
When it’d it become about me?
accolades under my belt,
lets keep the carpet red when you round me
when did it become about me?
now that my name just might sell
all of a sudden they can’t just live without me
when did it become about me?
cause no one ever gave me help when I was by myself,
they left me drowning
it was never about me.
reflections of yourself and getting left behind,
you cling on to what’s left
juggle self respect, knowing when you’re next up
almost lost my sense of self, lacking in my self love
remember when they pressed us?
had to practice self defence
saying they got x’d out
coping never kept up
had to bring my people up
pops told me to share the wealth
hard enough to go alone,
harder enough to blame myself
hardest when it’s close to home
clearest when the senses hone
clearest when the senses hone –
oo!
[Junko]
cause you got me good
you got me good
you got me
x2
I’m broken up now
I cant exhale well
I’m choking up daily
on how I Broke her heart already,
still you aren’t happy?
Maybe it’s cause you’re crazy.
I’m not even with you
And still you control me
I’ve divorced from you
I’m divorced from everything
Cause I’m
Emptied out
I’m shaken how
I could made this same mistake
like every time now
I’m emptied out
I’m shakin now
A flake of my former self
because you got me good
[you got me!]
You got me good
[you got me!]
You got me
[you got me!]
You got me good
You got me
You got me
You got me good
[you got me!]
You got me good
[you got me!]
You got me good
you got me
[you got me!]
sick solo
