The growth of British rock music and the British rock music scene has been nothing short of amazing, with bands such as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin going on to sell millions of records over the years. In fact, rock music has now become so big it’s even gone on to inspire hit slot games such as Danger High Voltage, which is proving to be extremely popular.
Many would suggest that The Beatles were very much the lead inspiration behind rock bands, with their rock and roll style taken on by other bands around that time. Other bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones were pioneers in the genre back in the day, but the likes of The Who also became a legendary group from both the genre and the sixties era too.
There was, of course, influence from over the pond too, with many British bands being heavily influenced by the rock and roll groups of the USA. This saw many of these groups labelled as “British invasion bands.” There were fly by night bands such as Gerry and The Pacemakers, who enjoyed what many would describe as short lived success before disappearing, but the likes of The Who had a greater and much better aptitude for song writing, which played a key part in their success.
It was around the 70s where the rock scene began to be redefined by British artists, with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath very much leading the way. Rock had also developed a few sub-genres by this point, with progressive rock and even glam rock, a sub-genre made popular by the likes of David Bowie and Elton John, proving to be a hit with music fans all over the world.
The next real waves of rock to hit the scene were modern rock and a combination of sounds which saw new wave, metal, punk and what’s known as arena rock all combine. The Police, one of the greatest British bands of all time, and Dire Straits, broke away from the norm where rock was concerned to create albums in the 80s which received worldwide acclaim from rock critics.
We mentioned arena rock, and this was very much brought to the fore by the likes of Def Leppard, Motorhead and Iron Maiden, three highly successful rock bands who each earned the legendary tag. Since then, modern rock, or alternative rock, began to make its move, with groups such as The Cure and Stone Roses becoming the focal point, while other pop/rock bands like Primal Scream and the Happy Mondays enjoyed huge success.
In the rock scene, Britain, and the bands from within it, have arguably had the biggest influence on proceeding. The British rock scene has very much played a huge role in the development of rock and all of its sub genres, producing some of the most legendary bands of all time, who in turn created some iconic music.
