Emo Mathcore act KAONASHI share new music video for “Coffee & Conversation”

2 mins read

Today, Philadelphia emo mathcore outfit KAONASHI shared a new music video for their harrowing track “Coffee & Conversation” via a premiere on The Noise. Taken off the band’s 2018 EP, Why Did You Do It?, the clip dives deeper into the story of their three concept characters – manic-depressive high school student Jamie, Morgan the bully, and love interest Casey – as they sift through the throes of Lemon House High. Directed and filmed by The Contortionist vocalist Michael Lessard, the video marks the last chapter of Why Did You Do It?, but it is not the last fans will see of the story of Lemon House High.

The band are currently working on their debut full-length album, which will follow Jamie and the others through a new perspective, set for release on Equal Vision Records. In the meantime, the band has been keeping busy connecting through the world of gaming, recently performing virtually on Minecraft festival Block By Block West. as well as starting their own Discord channel. You can watch the video for “Coffee & Conversation” here now and purchase Why Did You Do It? via Unbeaten Records.

On the video, Kaonashi told The Noise:

“This video is a prequel to the music video we had put out for “5 Year Plan” a while back. It sets the stage and shines a light on the dynamic between Jamie, Casey, and Morgan; our characters in our story. “Coffee & Conversation” is basically a love song, so we wanted the videos to represent the relationship issues within the story. If you pay attention in the video, it can connect some dots for you in our story.”

Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2012, Kaonashi made their first impact on the scene in October 2013 with the release of their EP Native. Drawing from both hardcore and progressive acts such as Coheed & Cambria, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Contortionist, Kaonashi has molded a technical, aggressive sound to call their own.

With personal lyrics tackling the difficulties of depression and anxiety facing this generation, 2016 saw the release of their second EP Ex-Prayers in addition to a split with Sabella titled Never Home. In Fall 2018, Kaonashi established themselves among their peers with the release of their groundbreaking third EP Why Did You Do It? – a rollercoaster ride across seven tracks ranging from downright brutal riffs to serene, melodic moments that has taken the scene by storm. Keeping on with a relentless touring schedule, the band has shared the stage with the likes of The Fall Of Troy, Between The Buried and Me, Code Orange, and Knocked Loose. Having built an intense and eager fan base for themselves through explosive live performances, Kaonashi now join the Equal Vision Records roster, another success proving their forward-looking take on metal will ensure their rise to new heights.

“Hard-hitting and thought-provoking, the band’s latest seven-track release is an honest and open take on life post grade school soundtracked by technical guitar riffs and chaotic vocals.” – The Noise

“Combining a myriad styles in ways most might have never thought, Kaonashi take the listener on a whirlwind adventure with everything from catchy, almost-poppy choruses to spastic,
bone-busting breakdowns.” – New Transcendence

“For as brutal of a band as the alt-metalcore outfit Kaonashi is, they’re remarkably sensitive.” – No Echo
