IN SHORTS #56 📢 punk/metal news roundup; January 10th

17 mins read

California hardcore punks ROTTING OUT are back with a new song and video called “Reaper”, their first since 2015’s Reckoning EP. The track has been released by Pure Noise Records and marks an important forerunner of the band’s possible future release.

ROTTING OUT went on hiatus in 2015 with frontman Walter Delgado serving time in prison after being arrested with roughly 70 pounds of weed in 2016. He was released on November 17,2017.

“The song is essentially about coming to grips with the reality that a part of you has to die for the rest of you to continue. Old rules and defense mechanisms are no longer applicable in this place and time for me. Those almost instinctively responses to every day stress and matters are now counterproductive. I have now realize that I’ve been self sabotaging my own happiness and progression. Cut off the limb before it contaminates the rest of the body forever. I have to be the reaper and bring to death things that are slowly killing me.” – Walter Delgado

NYC progressive blackened metallers KRALLICE have dropped a new surprise EP called “Wolf”. The new offering marks their shortest release ever and features 5 new tracks and around 16 minutes of still sinister, mind-bending sonic assault that made them cult favorites.

Toronto hardcore punk act THE NEW ENEMY have posted a punk version of Leonard Cohen’s “You Want It Darker”! The track comes from their new album Illusion of Choice, to be released on Friday, January 25. It features five original songs and three covers (Leonard Cohen, Snapcase, Gob). The release was self-recorded, with mixing by Will Killingsworth (Fury, Full of Hell) and mastering by Arthur Rizk (Code Orange, Power Trip).

Since forming, The New Enemy has donated all Bandcamp revenues to charity. For past releases, this has varied from youth shelters to cancer research. For Illusion of Choice, we’ll be raising funds for YMCA Sprott House, the first LGBTQ2S transitional housing program for youth in Canada.

Screamo/modern metalcore triad WRISTMEETRAZOR will unveil their Prosthetic Records debut, Misery Never Forgets on January 18, 2019. Towing the duplicitous line between suffering and salvation, WRISTMEETRAZOR issue nine tracks of blinding, chaotic emotion. Misery Never Forgets will be available on all digital platforms, compact disc and limited edition LP in two colors: silver with blood red splatter and cream with blue, green and black splatter. LISTEN to the scarring album track, “Expiry Date: 12 Hours” below.

The third vinyl pressing of Spirit Crusher – the staggering opus from DÖDSRIT is now available on white wax and limited to just 200 copies worldwide. Clocking in at just over 40 minutes of unforgettable, spine shivering music; DÖDSRIT expertly blends atmospheric black metal with frigid, bludgeoning crust on Spirit Crusher.

“This Swedish solo project whips together a delicious Oathbreaker-esque blend of d-beat, crust, screamo, sludge, and atmospheric black metal that ticks all the boxes if you’re looking for something that’s aggressive as hell but is also unapologetically pretty when the mood strikes.” -NOISEY

The album has pummeling breakneck-speed crust punk one minute, and towering, epic, Neurosis-style post-metal the next. There’s so much to like here, and not once during its 45-minute-ish running time does Spirit Crusher let up on the intensity. -BROOKLYN VEGAN

Hellcircle, the newest, uber-heavy jam from crossover sludgecore act MASTIFF have dropped online earlier in 2018. In case you missed this freakin’ hammer, check it out below. Baltimore, Maryland’s ANGEL DU$T have shared an official music video for their single “Big Ass Love,” which is streaming now on the band’s YouTube channel. The Ryan Baxley directed video debuted today via The FADER who avowed, “the Baltimore punk band decided to channel their big dog energy… propelled forward by racy percussion, swooning vocals, and slamming guitar riffs.”

Angel Du$t vocalist Justice Tripp detailed the new video:

“’Big Ass Love’ is about something creeping into your life and demanding your love and admiration. Most people can relate that idea to a pet. We spend a lot of time away from home so we find ways to incorporate our weird little dogs into everything we do to help us cope with being separated from them.

This past November Angel Du$t announced their signing to Roadrunner Records and shared two new singles – “Big Ass Love” and “Take Away The Pain.” The FADER placed “Big Ass Love” in their roundup of “The 20 Best Rock Songs Right Now,” praising the track for its “Fast-paced acoustic guitar chords, speedy vocals, and sunny melodies.” STEREOGUM asserted “Angel Du$t’s ripping hardcore seems to have emerged even more melodic… hurling forward with layers of percussion and a chunking acoustic guitar,” while REVOLVER named “Big Ass Love” one of “6 New Songs You Need To Hear Now.”

Angel Du$t will head out on tour this winter with Wicca Phase Springs Eternal and Guardin for a run of North American dates set to kick off February 27th at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s The Fillmore (see itinerary attached). Tickets for all dates are on sale now.

Comprised of Justice Tripp (Vocals), Daniel Fang (Drums), Pat McCrory (Guitars/Vocals), Brendan Yates (Guitars/Vocals), and Jeff Caffey (Bass), Angel Du$t is a band averse to boundaries. Stacking hooks and harmonies over unorthodox acoustic guitars, beds of hand percussion, and the occasional saxophone, Angel Du$t are leaders for the shifting zeitgeist into punk circles. That is their rebellion.

Grinding death metal act MISERY INDEX have premiered the title track of their upcoming album, Rituals of Power, slated to arrive on March 8 through Season of Mist.

“‘Rituals Of Power’ represents the album’s title track and most musically dynamic offering. We wanted to create something that captured the tension of this modern era; something that conjures visions of civilizational collapse and lost ideals gone astray and embeds them in riffs as monolithic as they are haunting. It is an anthem of hope as much as it is a cautionary tale; an end times farewell letter from the front lines of history. Turn it up and enjoy the ride…”

Rituals Of Power will be released in several formats including standard jewel case CD and digitally as well as limited LP, limited cassette, and limited deluxe digibox which includes bonus cover tracks – Nailbomb’s “Wasting Away” and M.O.D.’s “Man Of Your Dreams” – as well as a carabiner with key strap and bottle opener, a patch, and three vinyl stickers.

No Echo is hosting the premiere of “Straight Path” / “Future is a Shadow Line”, the new video by Italian noise / post hardcore act NORTHWOODS; the track hailing from the band’s “Wasteland” debut LP, out now via Shove, Brigante and Mothership Records. Watch NORTHWOODS’ “Straight Path” / “Future is a Shadow Line” video below and check out the full stream of the record, premiered on Cvlt Nation.

A reflection of the band’s diverse background, “Wasteland” draws influence as much from the frenzied and chaotic sound of Converge, Botch and Swedish cult band Breach, as it does the fury and melody of noise rock in the vein of Unsane. “Wasteland” brings something original to the table with a sound that is at once aggressive and honest.

Lyrically the album revolves around the denial of promises for a better future, taking inspiration by the closed cities that once existed in the old Soviet Union, where a very high standard of living came at a price of radioactive contamination. A song such as “Future is a Shadow Line” is based on a quote by Polish/British writer Conrad, who once described the last strip of land visible from the sea – the shadow line – as a metaphor for the future.

NORTHWOODS recorded “Wasteland” in the winter of early 2018 at Cinquequarti Music Studio under the watchful production of Lorenzo Amato. The cover displays a rare photograph licensed by NASA.

NORTHWOODS was first brought together in 2015, by a group of veterans of the Italian underground scene. The members of the band aimed to create something original – fierce, beautiful and honest, in order to contribute back to the pantheon of the great and timeless music that shaped the Italian hardcore scene. Their self-titled debut EP was released in 2016 and soon after the band began what would grow be substantial touring of the material with a strong and memorable live set.

Canadian progressive metalcore / metal act PROTEST THE HERO have revealed a live video for their song “Bloodmeat”, filmed on the Fortress 10th Anniversary Tour in Spring last year.

Besides annoying us constantly, he also took some pretty great videos & photos of us rocking! We figured that 10 Years on, we might as well piece together a performance video of Bloodmeat – after all, the original video for BM was the first and only full performance video we ever made… We hope you can spot yourself if you were able to make it to one of these shows. It was definitely a tour to remember for all of us.

The (Norwegian) West-Coast punks DANGERFACE are ready to release their debut album “Get Loud!” which consists of 10 songs really contributing to the genre and which revolves largely around finding positive outlets for negative emotions. Most of all they want to make people dance while listening to their music, and inspire their beloved and growing amount of fans to make right all that is wrong in the world today.

In mid-December, the band released the first single from the album called “Let it burn”, which got an overwhelming response from the streaming services with placement on editorial playlists such as “New Punk Tracks”, “Hard Rock” (Spotify) and “Hard Rock Now” (Deezer).

Swedish hardcore punk/sludge metal hybrid SIGNO ROJO is preparing to self-release a newly-recorded EP, End Of Tether, in mid-February, the first of several releases planned for the year as the band celebrates their 10th anniversary. The track listing, cover artwork, and a brief trailer for the new EP has been issued this week.

Formed in Karlshamn in 2009, SIGNO ROJO has been afflicting the world with their unique brand of abrasive, loud, and beautiful music for a decade now. The band continues the Swedish tradition of bold and inventive extreme music, their songs constructed on a foundation of hardcore punk and flooded with sludge-laden riffs and amplification. Following their celebrated, 2017-released Svårfödd album, SIGNO ROJO comes forth with some of their most forceful songs yet on their latest EP, End Of Tether.

SIGNO ROJO’s densely-packed End Of Tether boasts three thundering tracks totaling more than fourteen minutes. With downtuned riffs layered upon percussive tempos ranging from mid-paced rampages to bottom-dredging slow-motion, the band infuses multiple vocal styles into the songs, offering an empowering and infectious blend of styles. Written, recorded, and produced by the band at Evil-Looking Doorstop Studios, End Of Tether was mixed by Ola Bäckström, mastered by Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen, and completed with artwork by Jonas Nilsson, embossed by Basse. The EP features backing vocals by the Bodekull death choir – Johan Toresson, Marcus Österberg Johansson, Ola Bäckström, and Sebastian Einarsson – and guest lead guitar on the title track by Magnus Ölander. Fans of Neurosis, High On Fire, Entombed, Coliseum, Seven Sisters Of Sleep, Martyrdod, Kylesa, Black Tusk, and similar acts should not miss this.

Following the release of End Of Tether, SIGNO ROJO will support the album with live shows across Sweden and beyond while completing their next full-length album which will also see release later in 2019 as the band continues to commemorate their 10th year as an active band.

If you ever thought a slower and more atmospheric and cerebral “sludge version” of infamously fringe and violent extreme metal bands like Revenge or Pissgrave was just a silly pipe dream, think again… Like an acid trip that goes totally wrong just as you enter a torture dungeon of unnameable horrors and begin to allucinate before the most harrowing cruelty and inhumanity, MISCARRIAGE’s new album and Sentient Ruin debut “Imminent Horror” is a work which defies logic and sanity in its insurmountable display of violence, darkness, and barely comprehensible chaos.

Set to become one of the most shockingly violent, depraved, unsettling, and horrific albums of 2019, “Imminent Horror” seems to have crossed a new and never before seen threshold in extreme metal, taking the genre to a sickening new realm never before explored, and never before fathomed, not even by the sickest and most fucked up minds. Structured around a churning morass of hallucinatory atmospheres, derailing, discordant, and appallingly dense and downtrend guitar warfare, an illogically oppressive and unpredictable rhythm section, and a swarming haze of flesh-tearing screams, the songs on this abomination incarnated seem to want to reach out into a realm of the absurd to harness a level of hatred and destruction of unseen magnitude and plausibility. With their post-Carcass noisecore/goregrind roots firmly anchored at the base, Miscarriage have augmented the foundations of their sound and built an entire new world above it by bringing in elements of slower and more experimental and atmospheric extreme music coming from a sickening cesspool of influences as diverse as early Swans, Primitive Man, Corrupted, Ride for Revenge, Godflesh and extreme black metal, to materialize an aural abomination of near-incomprehensible horror. Classic homemade gore-drenched artwork and lyrics that can not and should not be ever unearthed for one’s mental sanity and safe sleep round out a release of absolutely incinerating hatred and despondency whose sole existence is already an inexplainable mystery.

Haifa-based post metal group NUR have gone thru various names and sonic metamorphosis before recording their first studio effort in late 2018, a three-track EP now slated for release in early February via Suicide Records.

Formed by members of other local groups such as Östra Torn, Barren Hope and Akrabut, the Israelites have plenty of experience playing this genre as evidenced on this new EP. An enthralling cross between post-metal and heavy sludge, this EP sees NUR churning out crushing and thick guitar riffs coupled with thunderous rhythms and grieving vocals. There’s a strong sense of claustrophobia and despair permeating every track on this EP that feels like a slithering snake slowly and carefully engulfing its prey.

American grindcore icons TERRORIZER kick off their European live takeover today in Poznan, Poland. The trek runs through January 27th in Osnabruck, Germany and features support from Skeletal Remains and De Profundis. See confirmed dates below.

Wrote Decibel Magazine of the record,

“If extreme metal is [drummer Pete] Sandoval’s ministry, Caustic Attack is the sort of triumph that’ll have you taking a look at that higher power.” Rolling Stone gushed, “Blastbeat expert Pete ‘Commando’ Sandoval shows why he still excels at the style he helped to perfect…” Metal Injection concurred, “Caustic Attack…is everything devastating you’ve ever loved about TERRORIZER and then some.”

Before Pete Sandoval recorded Morbid Angel’s first album, 1989’s Altars Of Madness, he performed on two demos and a split album with his original band TERRORIZER. Today, the group’s 1989 full-length debut World Downfall is still considered a pinnacle for death metal and grindcore, featuring impossibly fast blastbeats and double-bass drumming along with a blitzkrieg attack by late guitarist Jesse Pintado (Napalm Death), and ex-vocalist Oscar Garcia (Nausea). The 1989 lineup was rounded out by Sandoval and then-fellow Morbid Angel bandmate David Vincent on bass.

Over the next twenty-three years, Sandoval took time between Morbid Angel albums to continue working with TERRORIZER, recording two more cataclysmic full-lengths, 2006’s Darker Days Ahead and 2012’s Hordes Of Zombies. And now, another six years down the burning highway, TERRORIZER is back with Caustic Attack, their heaviest and most eclectic album to date.

TERRORIZER started working on Caustic Attack in 2014, but before they could lay down a single bar of music, Sandoval had to make sure he was healthy enough to work on a new album – which was far from a sure thing. Rewind to 2009 when Sandoval’s suffered a severe back injury caused by decades of Olympic-class death metal drumming. After seeing different doctors and exploring his options, Sandoval opted for invasive surgery to repair the deteriorated discs between interlocking vertebrae in his spine.

By 2013, Sandoval was feeling pretty good, so he got together with multi-instrumentalist Lee Harrison, who played on Malevolent Creation’s 1989 demo a year before giving birth to metal veterans Monstrosity, which have released five full-length albums to date. In 2007, Harrison joined up with fabled Crimson Glory singer, Midnight, with whom he worked until the vocalist died in 2009. Harrison has also played guitar with Obituary on tour in South America in 2012. Now, he’s deadly serious about his role in TERRORIZER, but at first playing with Sandoval was more like a hobby.

Feeling confident and comfortable again behind the kit, Sandoval invited Sam Molina, who played with Harrison in Monstrosity, to join them on bass, and the trio started working on songs for Caustic Attack. A violently explosive album for increasingly turbulent times, Caustic Attack is the sound of a world nearing apocalypse. The songs conjure images of warplanes on bombing runs, giant tanks obliterating small villages and the endless rattle of machine guns mowing down everyone in sight.

Sandoval has long been known as one of the fastest players in death metal – the pioneer of blastbeats – and he doesn’t hold back on Caustic Attack. At the same time, even the fastest songs are tighter and more precise than TERRORIZER have ever been thanks to veteran producer Jason Suecof, who’s painstaking method of recording showcases Sandoval and his team at peak capacity.

The proof is in the pummeling. There are flesh-shredding grindfests like “Turbulence,” “Caustic Attack,” and “Poison Gas Tsunami,” each of which swoops down, destroys, and depart in under-two-minutes. Then, there are the nearly five-minute-long tracks, including “Infiltration” – which slows to a thunderous breakdown before ramping back up to hyper-speed -and “Wasteland,” a global conflagration with undeniable guitar hooks and a lethal mid-song chug that reveals previously unexplored diversity and depth.

Swiss Progressive Sludge metallers HEROD (Pelagic Reords) have dropped a new powerful track and video called “Reckoning”. Watc the video below. FOR FANS OF: Scarlet, Breach, Yob, Meshuggah, Gojira, Textures

Herod have arisen from the everprosperous Swiss music scene. Throughout their young 4 years of presence, they have already shared the stage with such acts as Gojira, Crowbar, The Ocean, Carcass, Obituary, Napalm Death and Voivod – Attesting their repute as the bus boy’s of King Herod, serving up whole sides of rare riffs, disposition, beauty and authority. Initially the brain child of guitarist Pierre Carroz, 2014 saw Herod’s debut release “They were None” via Mighty Music and a subsequent European tour. Following the departure of original vocalist David, former THE OCEAN (Precambrian) vocalist Mike Pilat was recruited for follow up album “Sombre Dessein”. Pilat also plays guitar and Herod are now furnished with a supplementary layer of musicality to complement both heaviness and soundscape aspects of their palette. CARCASS guitar player Bill Steer makes a guest appearance on the track “Fork Tongue”. Recorded and mixed by Swiss audiophile Julien Fehlman, mastered by Magnus Lindberg from Cult of Luna, “Sombre Dessein” is an album of staggering riffs, intricate yet groovy polyrhythmic patterns and sheer heaviness. The bi-lingual vocal approach adds an unusual but intriguing aspect to the band’s delivery of their craft.

„The concept of the album is about the end of our Judaeo-Christian and thermo-industrial civilisation. The artwork and video clip are made up from footage of “Shipbreakers”, people who dismantle huge container ships which end up mooring to die on Indian or Bangladeshi shores“, comments Pierre Carroz. HEROD create a strong musical and visual image of the abysses of the human consumption project, „which turns out to be hell on earth for these people whose every day work involves constantly risking their lives to feed their families“, Carroz says.

HEROD will hit the road for a massive tour with THE OCEAN and DOWNFALL OF GAIA in march. Please find the dates below. And here is a nice flyer for this tour.
