We had the pleasure of sitting down with Jacek Radomski from APRIL (also of the legendary emotive hardcore band ZŁODZIEJE ROWERÓW) to discuss the recent announcement from Pasażer Records about the vinyl reissue of the extended version of APRIL’s classic album “Kill Depression” from Zamrów, Poland. This reissue is set to bring back the raw energy and emotion of APRIL’s fast and melodic hardcore sound, with lyrics in Polish and a touch of emo that has endeared them to the hearts of many Polish hardcore punk rockers and we’re super pleased to give you some more insights about quick update from Jacek.
The special edition vinyl features a multicolored splatter and a 16-page booklet with photos from the era and song lyrics. The vinyl will also include two sessions previously released on CDs, “Prolog” from 2001 and “Kill depression” from 2004, for a total of 12 tracks, including “Różnorodność,” “Jest jak jest,” and “Food Not Bombs.” The album is set to premiere on April 30th, and pre-orders come with a vinyl sleeve that is a paraphrase of the previous vinyl cover. Additionally, there will be vinyl + t-shirt and vinyl + longsleeve packages available for purchase.

Where did the idea for the new reissue of Kill Depression come from?
The concept of reissuing “Kill Depression” originated from Mariusz Prokusiak, a figure well-known in the DIY HC PUNK scene under the pseudonym “Bezkoc,” who also serves as the formal president of PASAŻER RECORDS. Mariusz painted a picture of the album’s scarcity, substantiating it with long-standing inquiries about the record. This went on for quite some time (3-4 years), and ultimately, we gave in, and now the reissue will be released.
You guys are quite non-commercial, aren’t you? ;) Based on the recognition of your projects, from Złodzieje Rowerów to April, you could ride that wave, make some money on merch, maybe play a reunion show, or even a reunion tour? :)
It’s true – I guess we really aren’t. None of us felt the need to forcefully continue the story, especially not for coerced applause. A breakup is a breakup – taking responsibility for our decisions and being aware of their consequences is what makes us adults. You can’t tell people one thing and then another. The publisher of the reissue calls our attitude “stubborn fundamentalism.” I, however, perceive it as a natural consequence.
Do you have any favorite bands that broke up but violated the golden rules and returned to the scene? Or does such misconduct cause a lasting aversion in you?
It’s not about aversion. It’s more about the fact that I wouldn’t do that myself, firstly; and secondly, it doesn’t mean that I’m right. I relate everything to my own experience and view all situations through that lens. I don’t feel any aversion towards bands that swore it was the end but then returned. After such actions, my trust in those bands is significantly limited. They have the right to do what they consider appropriate.
A concert I missed from a band that returned (I don’t know for how long?) was VERBAL ASSAULT, my favorite. I couldn’t make it to the gig even though visas were lifted, but I wish I could have. I can forgive them a lot.
So you see, not everything within me is so black and white and radical.
Ok, let’s talk for a moment about the new APRIL release. What can we find inside and how does this edition differ from the one in 2011 (attachment)? Tell us more about the visual aspect and how much vision and influence you had on the appearance of this release?
Yes, we had an influence – I can’t imagine it any other way. The album will include an extensive booklet with photos, flyers, etc. I had a strong desire to embellish it with a condensed history of APRIL, but in the end, I lacked the determination. However, I think the new design should be appealing. Petr from Underground Factory took care of the graphic side, and working with him is very efficient – he is open to all suggestions and responds to them promptly. For us, the final result is very satisfying, and I hope that the seekers of this record, about whom Bezkoc has been spinning tales for years, will also be pleased.
The idea that it will be a colorful splatter is the autonomous work of editor Mariusz. He probably thought that the music would blend even better on a color-smeared plastic.
Haha, I fully agree! This spring will be even sunnier thanks to that.
By the way, do you have any visually absorbing releases in your collection?
There are a few. Some people have a lot of imagination when it comes to putting their heart into the accompanying designs for records. That’s a good thing. Although I don’t specifically chase ultra-rare treasures, I appreciate the work and creativity that bands put into creating original releases for their music.
The best person to talk about this subject is Darek Gorzelak – currently the most active and meticulous collector and music enthusiast. This guy probably snatches up everything that’s released in Poland. Often, these are edition wonders beyond wonders. He’s on the subscription lists of all my acquaintances who are publishers. Have a chat with him sometime. It’s worth it.

April 29th will mark 16 years since your farewell gig in Warsaw. How do you remember that hot evening?
I apologize for the emotional excitement, but even after all these years, when I think about it, it was magical. Everyone who conjured up that concert has a place in my heart in a special hotel with premium-class rooms.
People singing our ballads in the way that can be heard in the moving images from that concert, and without a master of ceremonies, was the best thing that could have happened. Nothing more to add, nothing to take away.
Do you have any higher quality band memorabilia from Aurora? Will any of them be featured in the new reissue?
Apart from great memories, a series of photos taken by various people, a poster from that concert, and the video that can be seen online, I don’t have anything special. Some of those photos can be found in the booklet for the reissue.
After all these years, how involved are you in the punk rock/hardcore scene? How often do you attend shows?
It seems to me that I still live with this music and aesthetic. However, I don’t consider my involvement to be particularly extreme. From time to time, I write a few words for a zine about a certain record. I also work on a blog with my friend Bartek. As for concerts, I deceive myself with a lack of time, but in reality, I’ve probably become quite selective, attending events with decreasing regularity and choosing them according to a key known only to me.
Lastly, can you recommend any interesting zines or other sources of inspiration and knowledge, not necessarily strictly related to music?
The first thing that comes to my mind is the book about metalheads by Jarek Szubrycht, “Skóra i ćwieki na wieki” (Leather and studs for centuries). It was a very enjoyable read, constantly finding the scent and atmosphere of the ’90s when I immersed myself in the HC scene. The book is written with a light and humorous touch that I really enjoy. Moreover, it is filled with almost photographic details, yet there isn’t a single photo. This book changed my opinion about metalheads, whose ranking in my list was at a negative index. It’s a shame Szubrycht didn’t join the punks, as he would have brought a lot of color to the scene with his engaged approach. It’s a really great book. I sincerely recommend it to everyone without exception, from housewives to train conductors and ending with punk squat ultras. There’s not much inspiration in it, but it’s a wonderful trip to the past with a humorous guide guaranteed.

Skąd pomysł na nową re-edycję Kill Depression?
Pomysł wznowienia „Kill Depression” wyszedł od Mariusza Prokuskiego na scenie DIY HC PUNK znanego pod pseudonimem „Bezkoc” formalnego prezesa PASAŻER RECORDS.
Mariusz nakreślił obraz niedoboru podbijając go długotrwałymi informacjami o pytania o tą płytę. Trwało to spory kawałek czasu (3-4 lata) W końcu ulegliśmy, no i będzie.
Wy w ogóle jesteście tacy nie-marketingowy, co? ;) Bazując na rozpoznawalności Waszych projektów, od Złodziei Rowerów, aż do April, można by polecieć na tej fali, przy okazji zarobić coś na merchu, może zagrać jakiś reunion, może Reunion tour? :)
To prawda – chyba rzeczywiście nie jesteśmy. Nikt z nas nie miał parcia by kontynuować tą historię na siłę a już szczególnie dla wymuszonych oklasków. Rozpad to rozpad – odpowiedzialność za decyzje i świadomość ich konsekwencji czyni nas dorosłymi. Nie można mówić ludziom raz tak raz tak. Wydawca reedycji tą naszą postawę nazywa: „upartym fundamentalizmem”. Ja zaś odbieram to jako naturalną konsekwencję.
Ale masz jakieś lubiane kapele, które się rozpadły i jednak pogwałciły złote zasady i wróciły na scenę? Czy taki nietakt wzbudza w Tobie trwałą odrazę?
To nie chodzi o odrazę. Chodzi bardziej o to, że ja bym tak nie zrobił to po pierwsze; a po drugie- to nie oznacza, że mam rację. Wszystko odnoszę do swojego doświadczenia i tylko przez ten pryzmat rozpatruję wszelkie sytuacje. Nie czuję żadnej odrazy do zespołów które zarzekały się, że to koniec a potem wracają. Do takich zespołów po tego typu akcjach mam powiedzmy już mocno ograniczone zaufanie. Mają prawo robić co uważają za stosowne.
Koncert który przeszedł mi koło nosa zespołu który wrócił (nie wiem na jak długo ?) to: VERBAL ASSAULT, mój ulubiony. Na gig nie dotarłem choć wizy zniesione, a chciałbym. Im jestem wiele wybaczyć.
Tak więc widzisz, nie wszystko we mnie jest tak czarno białe i radykalne.
Ok, to porozmawiajmy jeszcze chwilę o nowym wydawnictwie APRIL. Co znajdziemy w środku i czym się różni to wydanie od tego z 2011 roku? Powiedz coś więcej o warstwie wizualnej i jak bardzo mieliście wizję i wpływ na to jak ma wyglądać to wydanie?
Tak mieliśmy wpływ – inaczej sobie tego nie wyobrażam. Płyta będzie zawierać rozbudowany booklet ze zdjęciami, flyerami etc. Miałem wielką ochotę okrasić ją skondensowaną historią APRIL, ale w końcu zabrakło mi determinacji. Myślę jednak, że nowa szata powinna się spodobać. Graficzną stroną zajmował się Petr z Underground Factory, z którym pracuje się bardzo sprawnie – gość jest otwarty na wszelkie sugestie i reaguje na nie błyskawicznie. Dla nas finalny efekt jest bardzo zadowalający mam nadzieję, że poszukiwacze tej płyty, o których przez lata snuł opowieści Bezkoc też będą zadowoleni.
Pomysł, że to będzie kolorowy splater – jest autonomicznym dziełem redaktora Mariusza. Chyba uznał, że na nabadźganym kolorami plastiku ta muzyka będzie się jeszcze bardziej komponować.
Haha, pełna zgoda! Ta wiosna będzie dzięki temu bardziej słoneczna.
A propos, masz w swojej kolekcji jakieś wizualnie wyjątkowo absorbujące wydania?
Kilka by się znalazło. Niektórzy mają sporą fantazję we wkładanie serca w oprawy towarzyszące płytom. To dobrze. I choć specjalnie za takimi ultra cudami się nie uganiam, to doceniam pracę i inwencje jakie zespoły wkładają w oryginalne wydania swojej muzyki.
Najlepszą osobą do porozmawiania na ten temat jest Darek Gorzelak – obecnie najaktywniejszy i najbardziej skrupulatny kolekcjoner meloman. Ten gość zgarnia chyba wszystko co się w Polsce ukazuje. Nierzadko są to edycyjne cuda nad cudami. Chłopak jest na listach subskrybcyjnych wszystkich moich znajomych wydawców. Pogadaj z nim kiedyś. Warto.

29.04 minie 16 lat od Waszego pożegnalnego koncertu w Warszawie. Jak wspominasz ten gorąc wieczór?
Przepraszam za emocjonalne uniesienie, ale nawet po latach jak o tym myślę to była to magia. Wszyscy, którzy wyczarowali ten koncert mają w moim sercu miejsce w specjalnym hotelu z pokojami klasy premium. Ludzie wyśpiewujący te nasze ballady i to w taki sposób jaki słychać na ruchomych obrazkach z tego koncertu i to bez wodzireja to najlepsze co mogło się zdarzyć. Nic dodać nic ująć.
Macie jakieś zespołowe, bardziej jakościowe pamiątki z Aurory? Któreś z nich znajdą się właśnie na nowej re-edycji?
Oprócz super wspomnień + serii zdjęć autorstwa różnych osób + plakatu z tego koncertu i wideo, które można zobaczyć w sieci nie posiadam nic szczególnego. A kilka z tych zdjęć znalazło się w booklecie do reedycji.
Jak po latach wygląda Twoje zaangażowanie w scenę punk rock / hardcore? Jak często udaje Ci się bywać na koncertach?
Wydaje mi się, że ciągle żyję tą muzyką i tą estetyką. Mimo to swojego zaangażowania nie uznaję za szczególnie extremalne. Ot od czasu do czasu napiszę kilka słów do zina na temat jakiejś płyty.
Coś tam dłubię na blogu z kolegą Bartkiem zaś co do koncertów to oszukuję sam siebie brakiem czasu ale tak naprawdę stałem się chyba mocno wybiórczy i na imprezach bywam z coraz mniejszą regularnością dobierając je wg. tylko mi znanego klucza.
Polecisz nam na do widzenia jakieś ciekawe zine’y i inne źródła inspiracji i wiedzy, niekoniecznie stricte muzycznej?
Pierwsze co mi przychodzi do głowy to książka o metalowcach Jarka Szubrychta „Skóra i ćwieki na wieki”. Czytało się ja bardzo przyjemnie co chwile odnajdując zapach i atmosferę lat 90 w których wchodziłem w scenę HC całym sobą. Napisana jest rewelacyjnie lekko i z tym rodzajem poczucia humoru, który bardzo mi odpowiada. Poza tym jest przepełniona niemal fotograficznymi detalami a nie ma w niej ani jednego zdjęcia. Ta pozycja zmieniła moje zdanie o metalowcach, których notowania w moim rankingu był na indexie minusowym. Szkoda że Szubrycht nie zapisał się do punków, bo wniósłby sporo kolorytu do tej sceny ze swoim zaangażowanym podejściem. Naprawdę super książka. Szczerze polecam wszystkim bez wyjątku od gospodyń przez konduktorów z PKP a na ultrasach ze punk squatów kończąc. Inspiracji wszakże w niej niewiele ale wspaniała wycieczka do przeszłości z przewodnikiem z humorem murowana.
