Today marks the arrival of “Spiritual Dead End,” the new hardcore single by Utrecht-based State Power, taken from their upcoming second EP, Final Hour. The song appears exactly six months after the band’s debut release and features David Achter de Molen of John Coffey on guest vocals.
It has been a busy first year for State Power. They launched with a sold-out release show, toured as part of Popronde, and shared stages with John Coffey and Tusky. Their debut single “Gates of Hell” was picked by Anti-Matter as “favorite track of the year.” Now they return with a fierce new piece that depicts Judgment Day, leaving no salvation for hateful believers.
“Spiritual Dead End” took its time to come together. Guitarist Daan recalls, “I just wanted to write a fun riff based on moving chords along the guitar neck, but it took us a while to turn it into a full song. The half-time section in the bridge was something Mert played out of nowhere during a show; we all looked at him like ‘THAT’S IT, THAT’S THE ONE!’”
Vocalist Stefan explains that the lyrics call out “hypocritical conservative Christians” who champion ideals of love but then support horrors such as the current genocide in Gaza.
“The song is me envisioning their day of judgement,” he says. Collaborating with David Achter de Molen felt like a natural choice for Stefan: “I immediately knew I wanted David from John Coffey to do vocals on this track, as I know he’s also very familiar with the phenomenon – we went to the same high school! I know he has previously written about similar themes. Actually, one of the first shows I ever played with my (then Christian) rock band was opening for John Coffey in Elburg – haha!”
With “Spiritual Dead End,” State Power gives an unsettling glimpse of what’s coming next. Final Hour seems poised to continue the band’s no-nonsense energy, taking on subjects that hit close to home. Today’s new track suggests their second year might be even more intense than the first.
