Not even a year after the release of the recent “Schizma is a state of fucking mind” tribute compilation on hardcore punk / punk rock label Hardcore Tattoo Records (featured in our mega feature on Polish punk and hardcore HERE), the spirit of the legendary hardcore band SCHIZMA renews itself through a new exciting project from PIRANIA, the band’s bassist and member of other projects, including OLD FASHIONED, SOLITARY, KOMPANIA KARNA, and 666 ANIOŁÓW.
PIRANIA’s new solo delivery “Era Wodnika” (out now on Spook Records) have the power to transport your mind out of the everyday struggle, right into the 90s rap infused, crossover, honest hardcore with nods to acts like Downset, Body Count, Rage Against The Machine, Biohazard, Skarhead, etc. The album grabs the attention with PIRANIA’s unique ear for hooks and infectious rap influences hardcore that brings back memories of some of the most radical pioneers in the genre.
We caught up with Spook Records and PIRANIA to give you some more background about his work, his take on hardcore, local music scene, and share his top records and other bands worth a check.

Asked about the origins of his project, PIRANIA says that the project was the outcome of the urge to record the material that had been made for several years. “For some reasons the songs from Aquarius Era didn’t appeal to my band mates from the band called Old Fashioned I used to play drums with for nearly 8 years.” – he comments.

To me, the material was definitely good enough to be recorded so I decided to do it entirely on my own as a Pirania solo project. As a musician I’ve been playing instruments needed for hardcore in several bands such as: Schizma, Solitary, 666 Aniołów, Old Fashioned, Kompania Karna and after all these years I was able to write, arrange and perform all the instruments as well as vocals on the record.

Many great records have been written in Polish and it always works when you sing in your mother tongue – with the right charisma you can always move the crowd, make them sing along and create a great atmosphere. I observed that playing with Schizma – songs in Polish seemed to make everybody go crazy, mosh, get on stage and sing-along. That’s what I want to achieve right here, and as far as foreign listeners – well I might become an exotic curio or another beast from the east haha…

Paradoxically, working in a band, you need to work with all the individuals who want to do their own songs, push their own ideas, and it’s understandable – everybody wants to have their share in the final output. However it often leads to misunderstandings, different visions, expectations and what’s worse terrible delays due to various excuses, personal problems, lack of inspiration etc. It might ruin the creative process and end up in a fiasco. That’s why in this particular project I’m going to need solid, reliable and apt musicians who will be willing and able to join in and complete my show exactly the way I want it. I hope to gather the right members from my home town crew which would make it much easier.

At the moment I’m focusing on supporting my family, bringing up my little son – Damian Junior and trying to do my best not to have to leave this country where political and economical situation is getting more and more fucked up and hard to put up with.
In scarce free time I’m working on new tracks and I can guarantee that if you liked my record or the singles I’ve uploaded on youtube, you won’t be disappointed with the new shit I’m cooking. It’s gonna be raw and hard, with a drop D guitar sound.
In my humble opinion, at the moment we’re facing a tremendous plethora, sort of abundance so to speak. I mean the number of bands in global scale is really overwhelming. In this maze it’s hard to find something that draws attention, stands out and so sticks in your memory. Although there are many oustanding, recording bands I’m trying to be very selective as far as the new stuff is concerned.

The same refers to lyrics. It doesn’t mean I don’t listen to hardcore or punk – I’m trying to stay in the loop however I often listen to artists whose sound is far from what I create. Making my solo record I meant it to be a really danceable stuff you know, to be groovy, to match the riffs and the beats to get that feel.
I get inspiration mainly from good old records that formed me, records I love to get back to. Definitely I’ve been influenced by the bands I‘ve played with over the years as well as that large group of musicians and individuals I’ve been able to learn lots of important things from. Both music and life-wise.
For twenty years, playing in many bands, I’ve met several interesting people, not only musicians but also promotors, enthusiasts, publishers, label-guys and other people who contribute to the scene. They are a great source of inspiration, give a lot of motivation, faith and hope that you need to believe in your own projects. This kind of mutual influence that everybody might benefit from…

I think we owe that to such legends as Abaddon, Kompania Karna and later Schizma. They started in the 80s and became the solid foundation for the hardcore-punk scene in Poland.
There are a bunch of great young bands too, among others: Unbeaten with a characteristic female vocalist, Trapped Inside Me – a straight up metal core band, Gniada – world class grindcore, B.O.K – a hiphop live band known to every hiphop head in our country, Dubska – a reggae group, getting more and more nation-wide recognition with every record.
There is also Kontagion, the other band of Sfenfon, the leader of Unborn Suffer – a grindcore/death band releasing its records with a worldwide recognition, then we have a punk rock Vallery Mess and a trans-indie group called YouGuru.
Until recently Bydgoszcz was very busy with shows for both local bands and all the touring acts whether Polish or foreign, thanks to a great club called Estrada. For 13 years it was the home for all the underground shows and events.
Unfortunately the recent restrictions caused by the pandemic made the owners shut down the business and sell whatever there was to sell in order to survive. It was a great loss and I’m sure we know lots of such sad stories and places that have disappeared from the gig-map everywhere. Unfortunately the lack of shows did not cause an increase in records sales that we expected. I’m also worried about all these divisions into the vaccinated and the non-vaccinated and all other restrictions that governments are trying to introduce, all of which will definitely influence the shows negatively. What’s worse covid has killed not only clubs and organisations but also many people including musicians and friends I knew and that’s fucking sad…
As far as relatively fresh stuff that I like to get back to, I gotta list the following:
KRAV BOCA – City Hackers – an interesting bland of rap and hardcore, additionally in French which makes it kinf of more exotic you know. I really like these kind of hybrid, such as once Esprit Du Clan with Big Red, also in French.
Lifecrusher – Soul Separation with lots of interesting riffs and rhythm solutions. Strong vocal plus uncompromising expression is what appeals to me.
Turnstile – Time & Space – have been following these guys since the beginning, we could say a lot, well I just love their originality, style and groove.
Drain – California Cursed – I got to know them last year and loved them immediately. I like creative approach to hardcore. You’ve kinda heard it all before but still they kick ass their own way, giving you the best of hc.
JAD – Wstręt , Strach – Polish band consisting of the members of Government Flu and Calm the Fire. Stylistically they’re the resultant of these parent bands combined with a raw, agressive power known from an old Polish punk band called Siekiera. They kill it live.
Raised Fist – Anthems – A very interesting material with quite untypical sound from old masters who know the deal.

Projekt powstał z potrzeby zarejestrowania materiału, który powstawał na przestrzeni ostatnich kilku lat. Z różnych względów utwory z Ery Wodnika, nie trafiły w gusta kolegom z zespołu Old Fashioned, w którym grałem na perkusji przez ostanie 8 lat, a materiał wydaje się być na tyle dobry i warty uwiecznienia, że ostatecznie wydałem to solo, jako Pirania.
Jako muzyk, przez ponad 20 lat rozwijałem umiejętności gdy na instrumentach, jakich używa się w gatunku hardcore, grając przez te lata w zespołach takich jak Schizma, Solitary, 666 Aniołów, Old Fashioned, Kompania Karna. Dzięki temu po latach mogłem napisać i nagrać sam wszystkie śladu na płycie. Utwory są polskojęzyczne, gdyż uznałem; że najlepiej jestem w stanie przekazać, co miałem do powiedzenia. Jest wiele dobrych płyt po polsku i jest to zrozumiałe, że ten kierunek się obroni, pisząc dobre numery w ojczystym języku, każdy artysta jest wstanie szybko zawładnąć tłumem w trakcie koncertów; jeśli ma odpowiednią charyzmę oczywiście… Ludzie wtedy, dużo chętniej robią singalong i nakręca to dobra atmosferę. Doświadczyłem tego zjawiska grając przed laty ze Schizma. Zawsze gdy na koncercie graliśmy klasyki typu “Odpowiedzialność ” czy “Mój Bronx” ludzie wpadali na scenę i śpiewali robiąc przy tym totalny mosh, przy innych numerach również, tych po angielsku. Ale utwór w ojczystym na gigu, zawsze wyzwala entuzjazm. Chciałbym właśnie takiego efektu. Natomiast w opinii odbiorców zagranicznych, mogę się stać egzotyczna ciekawostką albo kolejna bestia ze wschodu…
Granie koncertów które w przyszłości planuje, wymaga dobrania odpowiednich muzyków. Chciałbym zrobić dream team, który chętnie będzie grać mój materiał, czerpać z tego przyjemność. Paradoksalnie każdy chce robić swoje numery i wplatać swoje pomysły, co jest zrozumiałe, jak to, że każdy chce mieć swój wkład intelektualny w dzieło. Czasem zdarzają się o to zgrzyty w zespole, ale gdy trzeba przygotować materiał na płytę, wtedy pojawiają się różne wymówki, brak weny, albo różnego typu problemy osobiste, co też jest zrozumiałe. Ale ma to fatalny wpływ, na proces tworzenia muzyki i współdziałania zespołu. Więc skład koncertowy musi skupiać przede wszystkim dobrych muzyków, którzy bez problemu, rzetelnie i sprawnie przyswajają moje numery i z satysfakcja będą grać je na żywo, tworząc cześć mojego spektaklu, dając przy tym upust twórczej weny w swoich macierzystych zespołach. Jeśli uda mi się nawiązać współpracę z muzykami z Bydgoszczy tym łatwiej mi będzie przygotować się do koncertów.
Aktualnie, najbardziej uwagę skupiam na rodzinie, oraz pracy, żeby móc rodzinę utrzymać w kraju w którym inflacja wzrasta z dnia na dzień. Korzystając z wolnych chwil, których mam niewiele, przygotowuje materiał na kolejną płytę, trwa to od kilku miesięcy. W tym miejscu mogę śmiało powiedzieć, że jeśli spodobał się Wam mój solowy album, lub single, które wydałem w formie video na youtubie, to nowy materiał będzie równie dobry i będzie brzmiał ciężej, gdyż gitarę przestroiłem do dźwięku D.
W mojej skromnej opinii, aktualnie mamy do czynienia z ogromnym przesytem lub urodzajem jak ktoś woli. Mówię tu o ilości zespołów w skali światowej. W tym gąszczu, ciężko o coś co przykuwa uwagę i zapada w pamięć. Choć są kapele wybitne, które wydają dobre płyty, staram się bardzo wybiórczo poznawać nowości. Wynika to z mojej filozofii: Im mniej słuchasz muzyki z własnego nurtu, tym ciekawsze utwory sam komponujesz .To również tyczy się warstwy lirycznej. Nie znaczy to, że nie słucham hardcora lub punk rock, oczywiście staram się być na bieżąco. Często też, słucham kapel i artystów, których brzmienie jest dalekie od tego co tworzę. Robiąc solową płytę starałem się żeby była możliwie jak najbardziej taneczna. Chodziło mi o to; żeby ostre riffy bujały, do tego potrzebny jest groove, więc starałem się ubrać te riffy w takie rytmy, żeby ten efekt podkreślić….
Inspiracje czerpie głównie ze starych dobrych płyt, które mnie ukształtowały muzycznie, do których lubię wracać, n.p Death Threat “Peace and Security”, Madball “SET IT OF” SCARHEAD ” D.M.S” i wiele innych z tamtego okresu. Na pewno duży wpływ na moją twórczość mają zespoły z którymi grałem przez minione lata, oraz spore grono muzyków, od których mogłem nauczyć się wielu ważnych rzeczy. Zarówno tych stricte muzycznych jak i życiowych. Grając przez dwadzieścia lat w różnych zespołach spotkałem, wiele ciekawych osób Nie tylko muzyków, ale często promotorów, entuzjastów, wydawców i wielu innych ludzi którzy współtworzą scenę. Ich działania są ogromną inspiracją i dają impuls do działania, dają wiarę i nadzieje na powodzenie twoich własnych projektów. Takie podejście, często przynosi wspólne korzyści..
Lokalna scena w Bydgoszczy jest bardzo rozwinięta i często spotykałem się z terminem, że moje miasto jest stolicą hardcora. Myślę, że było tak za sprawą legend takich jak: Abaddon, Kompania Karna, później Schizma, które funkcjonowały od lat 80 i do dziś stanowią silna czołówkę na scenie hardcore/punk w Polsce. Jest też sporo rewelacyjnych kapel młodszego pokolenia, wymienię tylko kilka które są naprawdę godne polecenia: Unbeaten- hardcore z panna na wokalu. Trapped Inside Me -rasowy metal core. Gniada- grindcore na światowym poziomie. B.O K hip hop z żywym bandem, znany wszystkim fanom tego nurtu w naszym kraju. Dubska reggae band z płyty na płytę osiągają coraz więcej odbiorców, od lat plasują się w ścisłej czołówce na tej scenie.
Jest też industrialny Kontagion, który jest drugim zespołem Sfenfona znanego z Unborn Suffer grindcore/death kapeli która wydaje stoję płyty na całym świecie, czy punk rockowy Vallery Mess, albo YouGuru którego styl trudno mi sklasyfikować. W Bydgoszczy do niedawna wiele się działo a zespoły które wymieniłem oraz wiele innych zespołów, miało miejsce z dobrymi warunkami technicznymi, w którym można było grać. Mowa o klubie estrada, który przez 13 lat gościł tysiące zespołów i dostarczył wiele koncertowych atrakcji. Niestety wieści jakie do mnie doszły, nie napawają optymizmem. Ze względu na obostrzenia, jakie wprowadzono w związku covid-19, klub praktycznie nie funkcjonował przez rok i właściciele musieli z bólem serca sprzedać wyposażenie i zdać obiekt… To nie jest wyodrębniony przykład, wiele miejsc do grania zniknęło z mapy koncertowej w naszym kraju i na świecie, przez miniony rok. Przez moment wydawało mi się, ze brak koncertów wpłynie korzystnie na sprzedaż płyt, ale tendencja zwyżkowa jest minimalna.
Trochę się martwię o podziały na zaszczepionych i niezaszczepionych, co próbują przeforsować rządy wielu krajów, może mieć to tragiczny wpływ na kondycje sceny muzycznej. Widać covid zbiera żniwo, nie tylko mając zły wpływ na rozwój i działanie klubów i organizacji, ale też uśmiercił kliku znanych muzyków i to znanych mi osobiście, to jest cholernie smutne.
