Big band / orchestral / surf punk experimentalists THE HOLY GASP have dropped a new weirdly amazing single Beat Wave. It’s the first song from their forthcoming LP, due early in 2018. The song features 17 (!) players, including Karen Ng (Andy Shauf, Feist and Broken Social Scene), Jessica Upton-Crowe (Beliefs), Nixon Boyd (Hollerado), and many other notable Toronto musicians.
This was the first song written for the album, and the first song written after frontman Benjamin Hackman’s divorce. His thoughts on that time below:
When my wife and I split up, I needed to make an extreme lifestyle change. I moved out to Toronto Island and started work on a new record. I started with Beat Wave. I was real depressed at the time. And real lonely, too. Most days I couldn’t get out of bed. I’d lay there on my stinked-up sheets, weeping… wishing for my old life back… They were dark days indeed. I needed to write it out, to laugh at myself, and to take the edge off and find a way to cheer myself up. Divorce shocks the system bad, you know. It makes you ask a whole lotta questions about how you’re gonna live your life and who you’re gonna be in your post-married world. You set out to build a future with someone, and when you call it quits on a marriage, you call it quits on that future too. So you gotta rewrite yourself entirely.

Crossover metallers RISE OF THE NORTHSTAR are currently hard at work on the follow-up to their hit debut Welcame. The band traveled all the way to New York and entered the Silver Cord Studio to record with Gojira’s very own Joe Duplantier.
Commented the band: “If touring in Japan was always our goal, making an album in New York, one of the most influential cities in the world, with Joe Duplantier producing, is one big challenge. We’re here to enhance our blend of metal and rap and to take it to the next level. Each corner of this town is a visual mirror of the thickness of our sound. We’re gonna soak in Brooklyn and sweat it back out on record.”
Added Duplantier: “I’m excited to contribute to this album. ROTN is badass. Their approach of music is so direct, and they drive their career the same way. Definitely a great experience for me.”
LA VIDA ES UN MUS DISCOS label has launched a stream of ‘It’s All Done By Mirrors’, the 1983 LP from British anarcho punk / folksy experimental rock band THE ASTRONAUTS, who were early touring partners of The Mob and Zounds from late 70s. Check it out below and go here to get more details.
The Astronauts second album It’s All Done By Mirrors was originally released by All the Madmen in 1983 and finally gets reissued on vinyl for the first time. Original copies are now really sought after and on a lot of people’s wants lists due to both its scarcity and its status among outsider art, free music and weirdly enough peace punk fans. It’s All Done by Mirrors is a stunning collection of explosive pop songs and traditional folk ballads and considered to be the pinnacle of the Astronauts recorded output. It’s easy to hear and see why. Musically it’s tighter and more focused than on the debut album Peter Pan Hits the Suburbs and lyrically it’s on another level. From Mark Astronaut’s lyrical pen comes a woman dreaming of the Dorset coast whilst writing to her former lover (Seagull Mania); or the man on the street and his wife living out the final day before nuclear destruction (Typically English Day). Mark Astronaut really should been seen in the same light as Ray Davies from the Kinks with his observations of a time long gone. Three of the tracks feature legendary sax player Lol Coxhill. As with all Astronauts releases – totally under rated yet totally essential.
Original BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward was hospitalized with heart problems. He cancelled a West Coast tour with his band DAY OF ERRORS.
Ward stated:
“I wound up in hospital this past weekend with heart problems. I am okay and in good recovery at this time. However, I’ve never experienced this particular type of heart problem before, and due to its nature, I had to make the decision to cancel the dates.
“I want to send my sincere apologies to everyone who was planning to come out to the shows. I’m so sorry we won’t be making it — I was looking forward to seeing you all and sharing this music with you.
“I’ll be in touch soon.”

Sad emo alt rockers FUTURE TEENS have shared the full stream of their new excellent record Hard Feelings via their Bandcamp. The album came out September 29th via Take This To Heart Records.
Though standalone in itself, Bored and Alone is a precursor to the band’s first full length effort, Hard Feelings. The album title encapsulates how each song toes the line between despair and humor. “Having feelings all the time is hard — but everyone has them in one way or another— my goal with these songs was to write about things that happen to nearly everyone at some point in their lives” Radin explains.
Hard Feelings is out now via Take This to Heart Records features 10 tracks of romantic misadventure, miscommunication and mistakes. The album also features songwriting from Hoffman and Vadakin. Hoffman remarks, “These new songs are happy sad. Though some are sadder than others, singing them is always cathartic.”
