Heaven Shall Burn have spent more than two decades in German extreme metal, playing melodic death metal and metalcore with a political outlook that remains central to the band’s writing. Matthias Voigt talked through touring, the London riots, racism, DIY ethics and crowds far outside Germany in an interview published in 2012.
A 2022 split with Trivium put each band on a cover of the other, a little over two weeks before a European tour together. Three years later, guitarist Maik Weichert traced ideas of home, identity and power through “Heimat”, a tenth studio album the band refused to treat as a milestone, made while its members kept jobs and separate lives running.
