Dischord Records was set up in 1980 to get the punk bands of Washington, D.C. on record. Its first release, in December that year, was an eight-song seven-inch by the Teen Idles, who had already broken up and chose to spend the money saved from their shows on a record rather than divide it. S.O.A. followed in early 1981, and Minor Threat, Government Issue and Youth Brigade had singles out on the label by the end of that year. More than 60 bands have released records on Dischord since.
Scream made their first record, “Still Screaming”, for the label, and in 2023 Dischord put out their first full-length album in thirty years, which two founding members talked through in a long interview the year before. Fugazi’s first demo took 26 years to come out properly. The band recorded it in January 1988, when they had played just ten shows, and handed ten of the songs out free on cassette at gigs; Dischord released the whole session in 2014. Minor Threat’s first seven-inch was back in print on Dischord in 2024.
