World’s oldest diseases – an interview with experimental duo MILKINK

12 mins read

We’re living in fairly harsh times, flooded with information, becoming more ignorant than ever. The current era of both exciting and dangerous imbalances and consumerism invokes an appropriate lyricism and original music art works. MILKINK, an instrumental rock / noise / chaotic post hardcore duo, is responsible for some of this pleasant sonic deliveries. These fellas seem to pour their hearts and souls into these tracks and their smart metaphors and I am very pleased to give you this detailed introduction to their project. Launch their debut recording below and read the full interview in both English and Polish below.

[EN] Hi Guys! MILKINK looks and sounds very intriguing. Tell me a bit about the reason you launched such a project and what’s there hiding in your minds?

[EN] To be honest, MILKINK appeared quite accidentally.

We started performing in duo and at the same time we were looking for a singer and a bass player. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find anybody for so long, that in August we made a decision- let’s stay unassisted.

What we create now is a kind of a mixture of your and our worlds. The mixture full of fusses, love, consumption, loneliness, fun and dreams. We think that every aspect of a life is worth describing. No matter if you have smudgy hands; you can scream, purchase, dream, love- it’s very absorbing.

Additionally, everything happens so fast and it’s so chaotic. Maybe, it’ll be quite weird to connect it with “Łał” Hospital but we just perceive it like that.

(we are fully flooded with information and all that overwhelming show and fun around us)

[PL] milkink to szczerze mówiąc przypadkowy projekt. Zaczęliśmy tworzyć w duecie, szukając (oczywiście) wokalu i basu.

(Jesteśmy zalani informacją, spektaklem i zabawą.)

[EN] Ok, this will be interesting :) Ok, so can you tell us a bit more about your musical background? Have you been in some bands before?

[PL] Czyli będzie ciekawie :) Ok, powiedzcie jeszcze na start coś więcej o swoim doświadczeniu. Graliście gdzieś wcześniej?

[EN] Saw (guit): First, my six-year-older brother – a fun of metal music, bought almost completely broken drums and put them in the attic. Since that moment I have started to be fully involved in it. It was in 1990- the time when the Metallica’s album “ Black” was played almost everywhere. One evening, when our parents went out, my brother threw a party. That night I heard the sound of an electric guitar for the first time and I thought to myself “I’m ready to play it”. I decided to attend guitar lessons as I wanted to be taught to grab the guitar and to play blues or rock n’ roll. After some time I bought my own electric guitar. Then, I had no problems with forming a band. Me and my two friends started playing in my attic. We used to play in some small project.

A year ago while I was playing a concert, I met Robert.

baam_baam ( drums): When I was a child my father listened STYX, KING CRIMSON, RUSH or LED ZEPPELIN on our old silver Unitra audio equipment. We enjoyed the music together.

From time to time I bought myself music cassettes, judging them only by looking at their covers. To my surprise, I was never happen to buy anything else than cassette with metal music. My first practical teacher was a religious education teacher – Mr. Grel.

In primary school we always played classical guitar. I remembered it stayed in a break room. It seems to me the guitar was an old POLMUZ.

Where did I appear later? In local bands- playing bass guitar or drums. I was also a member of pop punk trio group but it was only for a while.

There were also some single projects – very let’s call them light, calm and experimental.

[EN] Sonically, it should be a walk in the park for you guys to satisfy fans of many different styles and genres, including post hardcore, math rock, garage rock or many other. Is this project a clearly defined musical creation, or are you still frivolously seeking some destined target sound?

[PL] Muzycznie moglibyście z powodzeniem zadowolić fanów post hardcore’u, math rocka, garage rocka i wielu innych stylów.

[EN] To my mind, the best way to find the answer for this question is to come to our concert. You will probably think that our songs are so different from that one we used to play. But it’s not like that.

We write stories and tell them by using sounds and beats. The diversity shown in our songs is something we truly need (even if the songs are of the same style).

I’m truly convinced that we have already formed our own style – the Noise. It’s the mixture of punk music, hc, grunge or even something like indie.

[EN] Where does your interest for developing these particular style and subgenres come from?

[PL] Skąd się wzięło zainteresowanie rozwijaniem tych właśnie gatunków i styli?

[EN] Baam_baam: I have experienced either ups and downs or interesting things in my life. Problems appeared quite often but fortunately music has always accompanied me. The songs reflected those moments. I have no limits in styles I listened. Even if it was NASTY, COLDPLAY, SIGUR ROS, NEUROSIS or SMASHING PUMPKINS, MILES AWAY I’ve always opened into something which could fulfill my expectations.

Saw: When we write songs, we try not to focus on particular styles of music. The truth is that our music is slightly different from that one we listen daily. I like it coz in that way we’re avoiding wondering if something sounds OK or not. Out present attitude toward music came by stages and I think that due to such a spontaneous creation our music is so real.

[EN] Alright guys, so let’s discuss these two debut track a bit. Droping a couple of words on the track “Szpital” (“Hospital”) for FYH Magazine, you stated that everybody is sick with something. Does it mean that, in a way, each of our lives is a clinic? What do authors of this concept suffer from?

[PL] Ok, porozmawiajmy o Waszych dwóch debiutanckich kompozycjach.

It’s only a metaphor and it has nothing in common with reanimation, a sick leave or a referral to an orthopedist. The Hospital is The World with diseases like a consumption, love, job, addiction to media, a rat race, everlasting fun. Those diseases are hard to be fully recovered from, besides we have no receipts.

We have the same symptoms and we can sometimes describe them by music.

“Łał”- it’s the name of The Hospital, but we won’t tell anything more. Read and listen our music, then you may understand everything.

Alright, so “Łał”, on the other hand, tells a story of a fast changing, overwhelming world, but does this observation have only negative meaning? The rapid circulation of information and the ease of its accessibility guarantees our progress, doesn’t it? So maybe it’s more like a negative side effect of something good and progressive?

Szybkość obiegu i łatwość dostępu do informacji to gwarant rozwoju i progresu ludzkości.

[EN] Is “Łał” negative? It depends on your attitude toward it. We don’t perceive it only to be negative. “Łał” is either chaotic or aggressive. Let’s for example take the big amount of products or goods from the shop shelves and form the market. One can assume it’s a positive move while second may only see negative aspects of such move. We aren’t to judge the quality of life, we just show it. The sociologist and philosophers are to judge something like that. We can only add that “If you don’t move ahead, you can’t make a progress”.

And we hope the history leads our to the right direction.

[PL] Czy Łał jest wyłącznie negatywny? Zależy jak na to spojrzysz. My uważamy, że nie. Łał jest chaotyczny i agresywny.
Weźmy np.: Potężne ilości produktów/towarów na półkach sklepowych i rynku. Jedni powiedzą, że to pozytywne zjawisko, drudzy, że negatywne. Nie nam oceniać jakość życia, my go tylko przedstawiamy. Ocenę zostawmy filozofom i socjologiom.

[EN] Where do you envisage MILKINK’s future lying? What are your plans for this Winter?

[PL] A w którą stronę idzie MILKINK? Jakie macie plany na zimę?

[EN] We’ll have to play some concerts. At the beginning of 2016 we want to record a new material. We play our songs and at the same time we create something new. If it comes to our plans – we will surely try a storytelling. It sounds differently – we will see…

[PL] Mamy do zagrania dwa koncerty, w Gorzowie i Szczecinie.

[EN] Do you think the visual aspect of running a band is important for you guys? You published your first promotional pics a while ago. Can we expect more press materials, music video, VJ works for you live shows, etc.? What’s your take on going beyond the music itself and using a band as a tool to activate the appropriate spirit and inject broader stories into music?

[EN] You know, we prefer to give people our music rather than our faces. That’s why we decided not to show our faces on first photos but we are not sure of our decision yet.

During the concerts – performance, attires, disguise and other gadgets – it’s not our cup of tea.

What you can expect is the loud music, full of emotions.

Photo shot? Yes, we plan to have a small one, moreover we will record some live form our break room. The video clip- unfortunately we have no money, maybe in the future we will think about recording our own CD or a vinyl.

As it comes to the latest question, we think if it has coherent lore, it’s OK!

My gramy tylko muzę z krótką historią w tle i to nam wystarcza.

[EN] Alright guys, thanks a lot for your time and this quality introduction to MILKINK. The last words are yours! Thanks!

[PL] Ok Panowie, dzięki wielkie za Wasz czas i wprowadzenie do MILKINK. Ostatnie słowa są Wasze! Dzięki!

[EN] Greetings to our friends and people we were lucky to play with.

Charles, thanks for the meeting, IDIOTEQ!

[PL] Skorzystamy z chwilowej sławy (śmiech) i pozdrowimy wszystkich naszych znajomych, przyjaciół i ludzi z którymi kiedyś graliśmy! Pozdrawiamy Was! :-) :-) :-)

Karol, zajebiste dzięki za spotkanie z IDIOTEQ!
