Following a succession of successful shows supporting the likes of Blanket, Inter Arma, Wren and Planes Mistaken For Stars, Sheffield, UK based post metallic blackgaze / post hardcore band HIDDEN MOTHERS are set to unleash their debut self-titled EP on galaxy swirl vinyl and digital formats through emerging new UK label Surviving Sounds on September 18th, 2020. Today, we’re giving you a special premiere of their beautiful new single ‘Beneath, To The Earth’, recorded at No Studio by Joe Clayton (Pijn, Leeched) and mastered by Scott Middleton (Cancer Bats).
‘Beneath To The Earth’, is an explosive, riff-heavy song that journeys through a dynamic and textured post-rock middle section before reaching a ferocious black metal inspired finale, and serves as a perfect treat for fans of acts like Deafheaven, MOL, Envy, Oathbreaker, Black Peaks. Lyrically, the song deals with loss of life, adding a personal and cathartic touch that resonates with the listener.
Hidden Mothers are a newly formed post-hardcore/blackgaze quintet from Sheffield, UK, self described as “snow-screamo”. Asked about their take on the imact of COVID-19 on the music scene, the band’s bassist Liam Knowles offered:
“The COVID-19 situation has been very challenging for us. We didn’t really have the facilities to write or record anything from our separate homes so it put things on hold creatively, and it was frustrating having ideas and not really being able to bring them together like we normally would when we’re in our rehearsal space. On top of that, we had to cancel some really cool shows that we were really looking forward to playing. However, these are minor inconveniences compared to the impact it has had on a lot of people, especially the most vulnerable people in society. We all still have our health, no thanks to our government’s shocking response to the whole thing, and we are very grateful for that.”
In continuance of our Black Lives Matter support project, we also asked Liam to share his view on the George Floyd protests:
“We’re supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, and are fully in agreement with the international outrage that has been triggered by the death of George Floyd. Of course it’s not ideal that these protests have been happening during a global pandemic but unfortunately you don’t get to choose when something like this bubbles over, and the black community has been campaigning for better treatment forever, so really if the powers that be didn’t want this kind of action they should have acted before everyone’s patience ran out. A lot of people in the UK don’t think we have the same issues with racism as America, but we absolutely do. It’s maybe a little less brash and a little more insidious but it’s definitely there and it needs to be dealt with. On a smaller scale, we in the metal scene also need to acknowledge our own shortcomings when it comes to dealing with racism, and all forms of prejudice really, and work towards building a more inclusive environment for everyone. ”
Sheffield music scene
” The Sheffield scene is pretty decent; we’ve had a lot of support locally since we started out which has helped enormously. There’s a good handful of solid promoters (Holy Spider Promotions and Circle Sounds spring to mind) and independent venues (like Network and Record Junkee) that keep things ticking over, as well as the Lughole Collective who are a huge part of the local DIY scene. Recently we’ve seen more of an influx of international touring bands hitting the city’s smaller venues, including Coilguns, Bambara, The Moth Gatherer and Portrayal Of Guilt, which has been great for both building Sheffield’s profile outside of the bigger corporate-owned venues and also giving small bands like us opportunities to play with bigger names. Hopefully that momentum will come back once the pandemic situation clears. ” – Liam

“We’re lucky enough to know some of the most wonderful bands in the UK. We played our last pre-lockdown show with Wren (interviewed for IDIOTEQ in 2014) and Wallowing, both of whom have recently released fantastic albums that are well worth checking out.
Joe Clayton, who produced our new EP, somehow finds the time to play in Pijn, Curse These Metal Hands and Leeched who are all ridiculously good.
Our label manager Chris does vocals in the excellent Agvirre, and Steve Myles, the man responsible for our EP artwork, is in the frankly bonkers band Cattle. The UK heavy music scene is insanely strong at the moment and we consider ourselves blessed to be able to work with so many talented people.” – Liam
