Post-black / gloomgaze act FICTIONAL CHARACTER balances the dark with the light in new sonic experiment

August 4, 2020
1 min read

There is also something extremely fresh in the way Singapore’s one man experimental act FICTIONAL CHARACTER takes a plethora of musical inspirations and turn them into something magical, utterly atmospheric, and at times deeply beautiful. Mixing different kinds of genres: post-black metal, blackgaze, post-rock, post-metal, ambient, noise, sludge and drone doom, FICTIONAL CHARACTER is a lot to absorb. Today, we offer you his new single “Red Fog Above Our Heads And Dreams By The Window” and special first-hand commentary, revealing more details and insights about his unique work.

“I started this collaboration track with my friend ARMS and Ivan Bridges (artist of the track cover) last May 2020 during the lockdown in the Philippines.” – says FICTIONAL CHARACTER. “Waking up with a feeling of uncertainty of what’s gonna happen next with this pandemic really pushed me to create this track.

Having this weight of uncertainty during this pandemic. The Philippines is now in the top 5 w/ the highest covid cases in SEA and the PH goverment’s incompetence against the virus. They are also creating more distractions than focusing on what’s needed to be fixed.”

“I only got 3 sentences for this track,

“Why now? Is it the end? Are we dead?”

I also let the listeners interpret my music with their experience listening to it. Also, I made a video for this that I think will add explanations to our track by staring at the window and watching ’til the end.”

Asked about other bands and some new music inspirations, he replied: “Here are some websites worth checking out and to discover bands from the Philippines. I have too many bands to recommend so I’ll share this instead:”
