Employed to Serve are poised to release their latest album, Fallen Star, on April 25 via Spinefarm Records, marking a significant evolution in their career. This 11-track record continues their journey of refining a distinct sound while embracing new creative approaches. The band, known for blending aggression with introspection, sets the tone with a lead single that showcases both their technical prowess and thematic focus.
The album’s lead single, Atonement, features Will Ramos of Lorna Shore, whose collaboration is notable not only for his trademark growls but also his clean vocals—a first for Ramos on a guest feature. According to guitarist and songwriter Sammy Urwin, the track is a powerful anthem aimed at “those who try to lord their power over you.” He explains that the song’s ethos reflects the band’s belief in resilience and perseverance: “We’re strong believers of working hard and not letting life and the negative people in it affect your goals and aspirations.”
Musically, Atonement combines relentless distorted guitars and hammering rhythms, culminating in what vocalist Justine Jones describes as “an arena rock chorus.” The song also includes a Judas Priest-inspired guitar solo, bridging heavy metal tradition with a modern edge.
The music video for Atonement was filmed in Scranton, Pennsylvania, a nod to the city’s pop culture fame as the setting of The Office. Justine shared insights into the video shoot, which involved her portraying a figure of authority. Reflecting on the intense yet playful experience, she noted, “By take 15 or so, I got more into it as the jetlag and hot weather made me feel more unhinged.”
Unlike the cathartic anger of their earlier release, The Warmth of a Dying Sun (2017), Fallen Star focuses on empowerment and positivity.
The album delves into themes of inner confidence, standing firm in personal beliefs, and the strength of unity. Produced and mixed by long-time collaborator Lewis Johns, the record also features notable guest appearances, including Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage on Whose Side Are You On? and Serena Cherry of Svalbard on Last Laugh.
Employed to Serve’s evolution is deeply rooted in their journey from the London underground to global stages. With previous releases like Conquering (2021), they’ve opened for heavyweights like Gojira and performed at festivals such as Bloodstock and Wacken. The upcoming UK headline tour in April, supported by Celestial Sanctuary and Burner, will culminate in their largest London show to date at the O2 Academy Islington.
Beyond the album release, Employed to Serve will embark on a packed summer festival season, including Graspop in Belgium and Jera On Air in the Netherlands, with more international dates expected soon. Their ongoing ambition to represent and innovate within the heavy metal scene is summed up by Sammy: “We want to fly the flag for heavy metal and the traditions that it holds, but at the same time we want to play our part in taking things forward.”
