Noise rock, latin percussion, and post hardcore blends on “El Rey” by FLORIDA MAN

1 min read

Charleston-based noise rock and post hardcore hybrid Florida Man is back with “El Rey,” a chaotic, groove-heavy track that blends noise rock, Latin percussion, and hardcore energy into a tight three-minute statement.

The single delivers a blistering mix of frenzied rhythm and sharp commentary, built on the interplay of percussion-driven bass grooves and fuzzed-out guitar effects.

Jim O’Connor’s vocals are raw, leaning into a satirical portrayal of a slippery politician. The repeated line, “I was built to make you dance,” is less a promise and more an indictment, sinking into the brain like the hook of a song you didn’t ask to hear but can’t forget.

“El Rey” comes with an equally feverish video directed by guitarist Andrew Barnes. The visuals match the manic energy of the song, further embedding Florida Man’s knack for pairing their musical chaos with compelling imagery.

Formed in 2017, Florida Man first made waves with their self-titled debut, gaining traction in the Southeast’s DIY scene. Their second release, Tropical Depression (2019), brought broader attention, with nods from outlets like Revolver, NPR, and BrooklynVegan. Then the pandemic hit, putting plans on hold and casting doubt on their future. Now, after a prolonged hiatus, the band returns sharper and more creative, fueled by a sense of renewal.

The lineup includes Andrew Barnes on guitar, keys, samples, and vocals, CJ DeLuca handling bass and vocals, Jim O’Connor as lead vocalist, and Jonathan Peace on drums.
