PETROL GIRLS – “Slug” video

PETROL GIRLS live
An upcoming EP from PETROL GIRLS called ‘Some Thing’ has just received the official video called ‘Slug’. Put together by Andrew Northop, loosely draws different ideas together, using the technique of datamoshing (the glitchy appearance is deliberate) to emphasize said ideas of alienation and distance. The 7″ version of ‘Some Thing’ is now finally up for pre-order in Europe (LaserLife Records) and North America (Panic State Records). The official release date for the 7″, which the band recorded last year with Marta Salogni at Strongroom London, as well as a compilation CD (out on Bomber Music) including both ‘Some Thing’ as well as the band’s first self-titled EP is February 19th (stream it below). There will be a release show at the Black Heart in Camden, London together with the folks in KAMIKAZE GIRLS and DARKO on February 13th. GO HERE to see more details on that and watch the new music video below.
Petrol Girls are a feminist post-hardcore band, based in South East London. Formed in 2013 for an international women’s day gig, Petrol Girlscontinue to tour regularly around the UK and mainland Europe. Their music combines manic jagged rhythms with vocals that range from furious screaming to intricate melodies and harmonies. Drawing direct influence from Refused, White Lung, Bikini Kill, Fugazi, RVIVR, Propagandhi, At The Drive-In and War On Woman, Petrol Girls have sculpted a sound and a performance that is not only explosive, but highly detailed and rawkus.
Petrol Girls identify explicitly as a feminist band and draw on personal experiences to challenge and ridicule sexism, as well as exploring wider political themes, such as alienation, mental health and the current anti-austerity movement. Sometimes desperate and sometimes defiant, ‘Some Thing’ interrogates some big political ideas from an acutely personal perspective. Mental health and relationship issues open up into wider questions about alienation, borders, complicity and control.
It draws together different musical influences in a way that reflects this collision of ideas in the context of a culture that feels increasingly less human.

Lyrics:

Back into the sludge
There’s less of me now
Less human somehow
Void of empathy
Void of energy
There’s less of me now
Less human somehow

The air is stale and thick with sleep
Black mould rises all across the sweating walls
The borders close, defences rise
Hear no warmth in how some humans are described

These are the walls these are the words
I can see them forming blocks around my days

Go through the motion
With no emotion

Where are you now
Lost in this fear
Run to nowhere
Nothing is clear

These are the walls these are the words
I can see them forming blocks around my days
I won’t fear life while I’m alive
Even as the colours melt into the grey

I’ve gotta go
I’ve got to get up and go
