The continual ascent and experimentation of Toronto based blackened, screamo-infused post metal / post hardcore professors RESPIRE has been nothing short of spectacular and compelling. After the mournful, cathartic, and heart-rending masterpiece ‘Gravity and Grace‘ (2016), they are back with a new, brilliant record ‘Dénouement’, a well-realized document of expertly delivered combination of styles, with more than its fair share of touching and demanding compositions. One of them, dubbed “Shiver”, is premiering below, and we can’t wait for you to feel it deep inside. Beneath all the noise and the chaos around our daily routines, it brings an almost unnerving sense of delightfully evil peace that fills you deep inside your soul. You can’t escape it.
Dénouement was recorded over the course of ten days by Vince Soliveri and Nicolas Field. It is produced / mixed by Paul Mack (MPL), and mastered by Jack Shirley (of Atomic Garden Studios and Deafheaven fame). Dénouement will be released digitally and on 12” vinyl via independent record labels Middle Man Records (US), Zegema Beach Records (CAN), Narshardaa Records (DE), and Dingleberry Records (DE) on May 1, 2018.
RESPIRE on Dénouement are: Ben Oliver – bass; Travis Dupuis – drums; Darren Scarfo – guitar; Egin Kongoli – guitar, glockenspiel, synth, vocals; Rohan Lilauwala – guitar, glockenspiel, vocals; Eslin McKay – violin, viola. The project’s extended family include Emmett O’Reilly – trumpet; Thomas Moffett – trumpet, trombone; Jordaan Mason – accordion, singing saw, voice; Andrew Molgjun – tenor saxophone; Tokyo Speirs – piano, cello, music box, synth; Nicolas Field – voice; Vanessa Gloux – voice Mark Wilson – voice.
RESPIRE is an orchestral post-black metal / screamo band from Toronto, Canada. Since their inception in 2013, Respire has been crafting cinematic, genre-defying soundscapes, perfectly blending lush, heartwrenching orchestration with the ferver and aggression of hardcore punk to create something wholly unique.
After releasing their debut LP Gravity and Grace to underground acclaim in 2016 and embarking on a European tour in 2017, Respire has returned to the studio in 2018 to craft their follow up LP, Dénouement.
Dénouement takes the groundwork laid in Gravity and Grace and elevates both the thematic and sonic to new, brutal heights. A stark and relentless confessional from the bottom of addiction’s barrel, a coming to terms with trauma, guilt, shame, and a pining for catharsis, for self-forgiveness and self-acceptance. Respire is a collective in essence and in practice, with deep roots in DIY/DIT. Individually and collectively, members run labels, book shows in the Toronto area and wear their love of their community on their sleeves.
