Metal is the umbrella over the many styles that branched off heavy metal. In the 1980s thrash bands took complicated riffs to breakneck speed, death metal and black metal grew out of thrash into harsher and faster music, and 1990s alternative metal mixed thrash and grunge with hip-hop and industrial touches.
Finnish band Agarwaen coined βAsylum Metalβ for their mix of black metal, progressive structures, symphonic stretches and spoken vocal passages, staged live like a scene from an asylum horror film. Frontman Anthony Hodju also runs Bloodstained Metal, which helps underground Finnish bands get live experience and share gigs.
