Post-punk kept punk’s DIY impulse while loosening its musical rules. Synthesizers, unconventional song structures and influences from disco, dub and krautrock became part of the vocabulary. Some bands stayed guitar-led, while others moved toward darker electronic and dance-oriented forms without losing punk’s abrasion.

That opening came after the 1977 punk explosion. Wire, Gang of Four, Joy Division, Public Image Ltd and the Cure are among the bands associated with the first wave, when artists inspired by punk started moving away from the Sex Pistols template and toward more experimental forms.

The IDIOTEQ archive carries the same idea through very different local settings. Hamburg’s see more glass came from punk and hardcore backgrounds and used the band to try something different, while also talking about basement shows, left-wing DIY venues and Rote Flora. Melbourne’s Royal Commission went another way, recording on four-track and building songs around a limited home setup.

Norrtälje’s Isolated Youth sit on the colder side of the archive. New Hampshire’s Old Moon connects home recording with post-punk and shoegaze. Gdańsk’s Żurawie place post-punk next to noise rock and post-hardcore. New York’s Clone connect post-punk with songs about marginalisation and disenchantment on “CL.1”.

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO IDIOTEQ

As an independent magazine IDIOTEQ supports DIY ethics and local artists of all kinds. With no-ads policy and mission to give independent artists space they deserve, IDIOTEQ is a place to get inspired, learn more about lesser known artists and their perspective. Reporting on DIY music is our priority.

IDIOTEQ (pronounce “idiotec”) is a phonetic transcription of the word Idioteque – the act of suddenly going into a crazy, seizure like state. A vision of a society, where people are increasingly more obsessed with pointless technology, selfishness and mindless entertainment than life itself.
