Philly’s post metal maestros ROSETTA unveil the full stream of their sixth full-length album, and third major independent self-release, called “Utopioid”, a perfect follow-up to their last album Quintessential Ephemera that encapsulates many of the best ideas in the progressive rock/metal and post metal from at least the last 20 years.
As promised, Singapore grungy emo indie punks BRUISED WILLIES (members of one of our favorite emo punk bands of the recent years THE CAULFIELD CULT) are back with an excellent new EP called “Dark Humour”, available now via Dangerous Goods label. German post-rock duo, COLLAPSE UNDER THE EMPIRE, return with a compelling video for Dark Water, the collectives lead single from upcoming LP The Fallen Ones – due for release in October via Finaltune Records.
Purely instrumental, the track is reminiscent of bands such as Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai, and Maybeshewill, finding strength in an expansive, cinematic quality that is intrinsic to the genre. Dynamic explosions of reverb soaked guitars soar over rolling snares, in an otherwise ambient instrumental climate.
As purveyors of highly interpretive and emotionally charged music, the Hamburg-based band offer up a simple yet poignant quote to introduce the video… “Nothing has value unless we grant it, only we can give things meaning”. The visuals are typical of Turkish producer Murat K?l?çs artistic style. With 9 years of industry experience, Kilic has produced projects for an array of record labels including BEEF Records, Stil Vor Talent and Lost My Dog.
This year marks 9 years since Chris Burda and Martin Grimm began making music together, and 8 years since their debut album Systembreakdown in 2009. Having already achieved the backing of reputable publications including Q, Clash and The 405, the German duo are no strangers to critical acclaim. In the last three years however, the two musicians mostly focused on developing other artists on their own label Finaltune, and have only recently entered the live arena, with their debut performance being at last years renowned DUNK!Festival in Belgium.

Alt rockers BAD POP are back with a trippy new video for their single ‘Other Spooky Is’. Having taken the world by storm with previous singles including ‘Bad Pop’ and ‘Same House’, the Canadian trio have built up a reputation for their imaginative and tongue-in-cheek music videos. Their sporadic journey around their native Canada saw them bounce from pubs and clubs to friend’s floors and sweat soaked venues and has now led them to the UK. The single itself is a statement of intent and a deluge of raw punk rock energy, warm analog psychedelia, and cheeky commentaries on the more shallow aspects of the music industry. The band skillfully incorporate pop melodies with a sense of irony, honesty and sadness recalling bands like Pavement, Pixies, and Modest Mouse.
Quebec City hardcore punk unit EXHIBITION has revealed a new track called “My Own Way”. The song is set to appear on their upcoming EP entitled “Point Of No Return”, due out September 16th on Thousand Islands Records. You can give the song a listen and pre-order the album on Bandcamp. A release party will take place on release day at the Cluster in Lévis, Quebec.
ExHibition is a punk/hardcore band from the Quebec City area formed in 2005. Back then, the band was mostly doing covers of songs from Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold, but soon enough the quartet began writing their own songs. Following a few line-up changes between 2008 and 2009, two albums was released, “When The Sky’s Gonna Be Black” in 2010 followed by “Never Again” in 2014. So far ExHibition has shared the stages with Reset, Dance Laury Dance, Exterio, Get The Shot, Guerilla Poubelle, MUTE and Bigwig just to name a few.
Hardcore band NONE ABOVE ALL (members of the tri-state area bands STEP2FAR, ZOMBIE FIGHT, and BLOOD OF MY BROTHERS) are gearing up for the release of their second EP, Climate of Hostility on September 9, 2017. Bridge Nine Records have shared the full tracklisting for the label’s new covers compilation to be released alongside the restored version of ‘xXx Fanzine (1983-88) Hardcore & Punk in the Eighties’, detailed at this location. To coincide with the news, the label unveiled a fierce covrer of Crucifix’s “How When And Where” by LA punk band NOMADS, which flawlessly transitions into AGNOSTIC FRONT’s crossover classic “The Eliminator”.

After an extended gestation period, legendary underground music journalist and A&R man Mike Gitter’s xXx Fanzine (1983-1988) Hardcore & Punk in the Eighties is almost upon us — and the epic amalgamation of revolutionary history, hard-won contemporary wisdom, and vivifying sound promises to be well worth the wait.
“Over nearly four years the xXx book blossomed into something a lot more weighty than just a collection of re-printed interviews and reviews from a well-regarded 80’s hardcore zine,” Gitter tells Decibel of the tome which also brings in new interviews with “musical prime-movers” such as Ian MacKaye, Keith Morris and members of Agnostic Front, Bad Brains and Cro-Mags to provide added depth and context. “It became a snapshot of some seismic changes in underground music — everything from Black Flag’s creepy-crawl into the sounds of bands like the Melvins and Soundgarden, the punk-metal crossover, the straight-edge stomp of the youth crew to weighty personas like Rollins, Danzig, Mascis and Mould putting their footprints deep into the mainstream-to-come. I have struggled with Mental Illness for most of my life. I have spent most of this time hiding it from the people around me at work and in public but my Family has suffered immeasurably from it. I recently made a decision to go off my meds because I thought I didn’t need them anymore, for some reason I thought I was fine. This resulted in me abandoning my Family for a week while constantly terrorizing my wife with vicious phone calls and text messages. I don’t know why I did it, I don’t know how I could have come to the conclusion that I didn’t need my meds but I’m here to tell you I was wrong. Meds may not be for everyone who suffers but if you’ve got it like I do you’ve got to commit to them and don’t let your mind trick you into thinking that you’re ok. I’m not ok. I’m far from ok, the damage I have done to my Family can’t be undone and I am so sorry to my Wife and all my children for the years of torment and abuse I have put you through. You guys have somehow stood by me and continued to fight for me and be there when I came back to reality. I’m putting this out there because I’m sick and my Family doesn’t deserve to have to hide my illness from the world anymore. There is no shame in having Mental Illness the shame is from hiding it from the world and forcing your loved ones to hide it for you. Please, if you are suffering out there don’t be ashamed to get help, don’t be ashamed to take your meds and talk to your therapist. Get in a program and do the work, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I could never say this anymore clearer then this, I love my wife and kids with all my heart, I have hurt them so much over the years and I am so deeply sorry. They are the light at the end of my tunnel and I will do anything to be standing in the light with them.

HEATHEN BEAST, the undercover band from India that’s speaking up against the unfair practices of the government, are back from hibernation to release a blackened slab of grindcore. Their improved direction allows them to express their issues in a more effective manner. ‘$cam’ is about the horrifying overnight discontinuation of 90% of the currency notes in circulation around the country, thus effectively bringing the activities, especially of the poor people who don’t even have bank accounts, to a grinding halt. Here’s an undiluted and venomous take on this whole biased decision that is apparently favouring the rich but leaving the poor people in deep trouble. For better or worse, this unprecedented demonetization move by the government in power has sparked a massive outrage and here’s HEATHEN BEAST releasing a scathing album about it in timely fashion.
Toronto alt rock / post punk band CASPER SKULLS (Buzz Records) release new single “You Can Call Me Allocator”; new album “Mercy Works” coming out on November 3rd.

We are positively chuffed to announce the debut full-length of Toronto via Sudbury via Oakville post-punkers, Casper Skulls. Mercy Works, which was recorded in early 2017 with co-producer/engineer Josh Korody (Fucked Up, Dilly Dally), and mixed by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Death Cab For Cutie), is densely arranged, intricately written and performed with an uncommon earnestness.
In You Can Call Me Allocator, the band’s rumination on mortality and evolving personal/cultural legacies through Elvis Presley and Paul Simon’s trips to Graceland (“You Can Call Me Allocator”) is an apt representation of how St. Pierre and Bednis collect pieces of the world around them and imbue them with new meaning as they attempt to understand their place in it.

Julie & The Wrong Guys self-titled debut LP is streaming today on NPR’s First Listen ahead of it’s September 8th release on Dine Alone. The band is comprised of Julie Doiron, of the ’90s Sub Pop band Eric’s Trip, Eamon Mcgrath and members of the hardcore band Cancer Bats, and while it may seem like an unusual combination, NPR describes the record as a “fun and freewheeling change of pace for all involved,” calling it “a chunk of scuffed up candy worthy of [Doiron’s] 1990s work.” In support of the release Julie & The Wrong Guys will be touring in September, including a run of dates with Casper Skulls. From the outset, Julie & The Wrong Guys may come across as an unlikely union. Juno award-winning songwriter Julie Doiron began her musical journey as a founding member of ’90s East Coast indie-rock icons Eric’s Trip, the first Canadian band signed to Seattle’s famed Sub Pop Records. Meanwhile, The Wrong Guys are made up of Edmonton-born country/punk troubadour Eamon McGrath alongside Mike Peters and Jaye Schwarzer, the rhythm section of Toronto’s metal/hardcore heavyweights Cancer Bats.
Doiron’s celebrated career, has featured a laundry list of collaborations with the likes of Chad VanGaalen,Phil Elverum (a.k.a. Mount Eerie), Gord Downie, The Wooden Stars, Shotgun and Jaybird, and The Tragically Hip, and these wide-ranging musical alliances have all prepared her for an effortless amalgamation of the Wrong Guys’ respective projects, where Doiron’s tender and lyrically evocative songwriting crashes headfirst into the pummeling volume of her bandmates.
Doiron first enlisted The Wrong Guys as her backing band in 2011 during a two-year stint living in Toronto. While working at the Bloor West coffee shop, café, and venue Saving Gigi, she asked them to join her for a series of shows. Finding an immediate comfort and chemistry, the quartet hit the studio to record a two-song 7”, then set off for high profile tours throughout Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes.
“All of the collaborations I’ve done over the last 24 years have taken me to the next place, whether I’ve realized I’m learning something or not,” says Doiron. “They helped me learn how everybody’s process is different, but working with these guys is super easy. Even if I never collaborated I could have just breezed into this band. Whatever is going on in my life before meeting up with them, I don’t feel stressed out or like I have a million things to do. We just make music and it’s super fun.”
Julie & The Wrong Guys’ self-titled debut LP, due to be released by Dine Alone Records onSeptember 8th, 2017, was recorded after Doiron returned to her former home of Sackville, New Brunswick last October. The Wrong Guys regrouped at Peters’ family cabin in the Manitoba wilderness near Red Rock Lake where, freed from the distractions of daily life, the group crafting the album’s music and lyrics from sun-up yoga practice until the waning hours of their wood-oven-heated nights.
“We essentially worked on the record for 12-14 hours per day” says McGrath. It was disciplined but there was no whip cracking. The environment was very tranquil, beautiful, and secluded. There was no cell reception and we didn’t have anything else to do but write.”
“There were a few songs where I hopped out of bed, ran down to the lake and wrote them in one go, but for the most part it was collaborative,” adds Doiron on the influence of their serene recording environment. “When I was putting myself into the songs, they were about figuring out who I am and what I need in my surroundings to feel whole. It was a bit more contemplative about finding my true nature and finding my way home, which is within. Who is Julie? Who’s in there?”
Searching together, Julie & The Wrong Guys have found a distinctly harmonized voice that weaves throughout and acknowledges the vast array of influences across their backgrounds, paying obvious homage to the music that drove these four unlikely collaborators together. As each member approaches the material with their own very literal insight of endless days across the world’s highways, they’ve come out of the woods with one of the most exciting debut records of 2017. Alongside delicate standout songs like “Call My Own Shots” and the McGrath duet “Farther From You”, Doiron also returns to her full-throttle, early ’90s grunge/punk roots on ragers like “Wanted What I Wanted” and “Calm Before the Storm.”
“I come from a noisy, energetic background playing in Eric’s Trip,” she concludes. “It’s kind of ironic that people refer to me as a solo performer or singer-songwriter because that’s not what I feel that I do. I made a couple of quiet records after Eric’s Trip broke up because I didn’t want to try to replicate it. Then I played with The Wooden Stars and made two quiet records after that. Every time I’ve ended a collaboration I’ve done that, and people still pigeonhole me as a singer-songwriter, but I love playing loud, heavy music.”

Melodic post hardcore band BEING AS AN OCEAN release new song “Black & Blue“, coming from the band’s previously delayed new album, “Waiting For Morning To Come“, which will now hit stores on September 8th. The band bought out their contract with Equal Vision to release it independently. Check out the new song, as well as the previously release track “Thorns”, below.
Guitarist Tyler Ross commented of the song:
“This song is special to me because it’s the first and only Being As An Ocean song I wrote all the lyrics for. It’s really, really personal, and all I can say is I started writing it on Warped Tour 2015, and it stayed in my mind ever since.”
Colorado death-grind trio, VERMIN WOMB announce tour dates with CULT LEADER, beginning October 11th in Salt Lake City, UT. The tour travels to Reno, NV and then heads to California for three dates in San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles. VERMIN WOMB are also donating all Bandcamp sales until October 6th to South Texas Human Rights Center, in support of their efforts with Tropical Storm Harvey relief.
Following their 2014 debut EP, Permanence (Throatruiner Records), VERMIN WOMB deliver ten soul-crushing songs, far beyond the definition of “grindcore”. Decline is raw and dark terror. With Ethan McCarthys’s trademark subterranean barks, raw-sounding blast beats and imperial riffs bolstered by Dave Otero’s thick production, Decline is a short album designed for maximum impact. If you ever wondered how extreme metal would sound like once purged of any unnecessary artifices, here’s your answer. VERMIN WOMB create a chaotic, boundary pushing sound that fans of grindcore, death metal, black metal, doom, and even hardcore punk will identify with. Alt rockers LEAVE THE UNIVERSE are releasing their first studio EP, N.W.O., today! Best described as alt rock/trap, Leave The Universe seamlessly mixes an alternative/post-punk band sound with the underlying production of hip hop/trap. Just last week the band released the music video for the EP’s title track, “N.W.O” (short for “New World Order), which was written the day after the last U.S. presidential election. Check out the politically-fueled video below.
Lead singer Cameron Cole and guitarist Kalin Pugh spent a year building a strong core following in their home of San Diego before moving to London and forming the Dead 30 Artist collective with Austin Arthur and the rest of the members of The L.I.F.T. While in London, the band completed N.W.O., which explores themes of breaking barriers in subjects such as politics, isolation, mental insanity and love, from a very aggressive and external point of view.
Magic Bullet Records‘ Five Weeks Of 5IVE continues, as the label digitally reissues the entire back-catalog from defunct Boston riff/math/doom rock act 5IVE. The 5IVE reissue series includes the titles 5ive, The Telestic Disfracture, The Hemophiliac Dream, Versus, and Hesperus, as well as the self-titled album from The Theory Of Abstract Light, a solo release by the band’s Ben Carr.
Following the re-release of 2000’s self-titled debut album, 5IVE’s second album The Telestic Disfracture now sees release. The album came out only a year later in 2001. Tortuga was the issuing label for both CD and LP formats and the band once again turned in six songs to comprise the album. While a lot of the riffing and stoner rock elements of the previous effort are intact, this is the album where 5IVE began incorporating more noise and experimentation into their work. The results are uniquely satisfying.
Personnel on The Telestic Disfracture was Ben Carr on guitar/bass/noise, Charles Harrold on drums, Mike Hubbard contributing guitar on the latter three of the six tracks and bass to the closing track as well, Andrew Schneider adding noise, and Jonah Jenkins taking vocal duties on the first two tracks. The album was recorded and mixed in March of 2001 by Andrew Schneider at New Alliance in Boston, Massachusetts, and mastering was handled by Nick Zampiello. Aaron Turner once again handled art duties for this album.
Five Weeks Of 5IVE continues with The Hemophiliac Dream as well as The Theory Of Abstract Lighton September 8th, Versus on September 15th, and Hesperus on September 22nd.
