Progressive metal joins the force and volume of heavy metal with the extended structures and compositional ambition associated with progressive rock. The style became clearly established by the late 1980s, with Queensrÿche among its early reference points and Dream Theater carrying it into the following decade.
The IDIOTEQ archive shows a much less uniform contemporary field. Kraanerg bring zeuhl and classical composition into experimental metal, while Urzah connect progressive writing with post-metal and sludge. Rise Above Dead return to vocals after a decade of instrumental development.
Elsewhere, Ghold move through a heavier experimental direction, Psychonaut open their influences out in a different way, and After Nations sit between progressive metal and post-rock.
