MonastR shares crushing new crust post metal epic, and 6 eclectic Marseille acts worth a check

From the depths of a looming darkness comes “Of Dust And Bones,” a new track from French crust doom post metal wizards MonastR, featured on IDIOTEQ back in 2022. The new track broods for a full 10.5 minutes and crushes like a filthy steamroller.

Combining crust, post-metal, and doom, it drags you through a grim landscape with no promise of relief.

Lyrically, it speaks from the viewpoint of the last human on Earth after a nuclear disaster—an idea inspired by Olaf Stapledon’s “Last and First Men,” where a dying future humanity warns us of our own destructive path.

The voiceover in the intro, taken from Jóhann Jóhannsson’s film adaptation, only amplifies this ominous feeling of impending collapse.

MONASTR

“Our planet with its fauna and flora has been existing and evolving for millions of years. But the human being is going to destroy everything in only a few centuries or even decades.” – comments the band.

MONASTR

“But what we seem to overlook despite all the warnings, is the fact that we will be one of the first victims. Nature will get rid of the parasite we are.”

This is just a taste from the upcoming EP slated for January via Shove Records, Counteract Recordings, Insane Society, Coups de couteau, Malammore DIY, Nothing to harvest Records.

To celebrate, the band sat down with us to seize this moment and comment on their local scene in Marseille.

Marseille bands worth a check:

Yarostan

Post-hardcore band with a screamo touch. They’re pretty active as they released 2 albums and several EP and splits since 2016. They also toured Europe several times. Live, with 5 members on stage including 3 guitars, Yarostan is definitely a safe bet.

Just like their albums, their shows are very intense and emotional. The new album has been recorded and should be released in June. A tour will follow!

Grusterror

Since 2014, Grusterror has been playing a sick black/grind crust with political lyrics and a great sense of humor. The drummer used to play in the cult grindcore band Filthy Charity. If you like fast and dirty sound, it’s your dope. Two new songs will be released this year.

Confetti Malaise

A 3-piece new wave/post punk band with a drum machine. Their songs are very catchy and some choruses are deadly earworms! Lyrics are about solidarity, personal feeling and resistance against all oppression.

Some members used to play in Canine and The Third Memory, an excellent screamo band from the 00s you should definitely check out.

Veteran

It’s a new band in Marseille and it’s already one of our favorites. Those 3 guys play an original acoustic folk with an oriental vibe (guitar, mandolin, ukulele and percussions). A few songs are available on their Bandcamp. Don’t miss them!

Silver Gallery

With Eyehategod and Neurosis as influences, SG plays an insane, gloomy and noisy post-hardcore/sludge. Big sound, slow pace.

Heaviness at its best!

Azken Auzi

It’s another very heavy band that’s worth more than a listen. Mostly instrumental, this trio stands out with top quality deranged riffs. The atmosphere is dark and gloomy as desired.

Think about bands like Monolord and Thou. They have released an album in 2023 and an Alice In Chains cover in 2024. New songs are ready to be recorded in 2025.
