Crust metal is crust punk at its metal-heavy end, taking in black metal and death metal. The sound runs on heavily distorted, bass-heavy guitar, palm-muted riffs over heavy-metal drum patterns and gruff, growled vocals. Crust itself developed through anarcho-punk and hardcore absorbing heavy-metal weight, with Amebix and Antisect among early bands associated with that exchange.
Slovak trio Ničiteľ keep a crust and sludge foundation, with guitars low and slow and drums patient underneath, while Pilori push blackened metal and hardcore together. Othismos work across crust, black metal, post-hardcore and sludge, and on their third album they dialled the black metal back towards their punk and crust roots. MONASTR combine crust, post-metal and doom.
