Southern Lord was launched in Los Angeles in 1998 by Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley, who had played together in Thorr’s Hammer and Burning Witch in the mid-1990s and had started sunn O))) by then. The point was to put out their own recordings; the catalogue since has run from Saint Vitus and Sleep to Poison Idea, Wolfbrigade and Pelican.
A good deal of its work is returning old hardcore records to print. Forced Down had their 1989 and 1990 recordings compiled, remixed and mastered as one collection, and Heroin, from the same San Diego scene, had their whole discography gathered up the same way. BL’AST! got their last studio album back more than thirty years after they made it, and Unsane are on the roster too.
