Doom rock keeps the slow pace and the weight of doom, but plays them on a rock band’s setup, with room for psychedelia. It runs close to sludge and post-metal, and where one ends and the next begins is a question bands answer differently.
Las Casas Viejas made “Goule//H” as doom rock crossed with post-metal, built around the anthropologist Marc Augé’s idea of non-places, with textures cutting through thick reverb. Brooklyn’s Mountain God balanced rough soundscapes and psychedelia on “Bread Solstice”, and Pretoria’s Acid Magus ran psychedelic doom into moody alt rock on “Scatterling Empire”.
