Ska punk takes ska’s offbeat rhythm and horn-friendly arrangements and drives them with punk and hardcore speed. The hybrid grew from the 2-Tone bridge between Jamaican ska and British punk, then became a major part of the third-wave ska revival from the late 1980s into the 1990s. Operation Ivy and Fishbone became important reference points on the punk-facing side, followed by a much larger 1990s wave.
Operation Ivy’s “Energy” came back through a 35th-anniversary reissue, and Fishbone marked a belated 40th anniversary with “Estranged Fruit”, a collaboration with NOFX. Montreal veterans The Planet Smashers returned to the dancefloor in 2025, and Public Serpents and Norway’s Norsk Råkk show the style continuing beyond its 1990s commercial peak.
