Pre-save their upcming debut LP at this location.

The members had a common history to share: guitarist Ball (also known for his presence in local nu-metal icon Insane) played together with drummer Kristóf (known for his activism as the member of melodic hardcore-punk band Satelles) in Subliminal Merger, and they wanted to write songs together again. With Márton, the vocalist of Anchorless Bodies, Szabolcs, their long-time friend and Attila, the bass player who organizes DIY tours in the Central-Eastern region for disruptive punk bands as Hanoi or Mass Reaction, VLKN came to life, and Ruination is their remarkable debut.

VLKN

With eight songs with the average playtime of two minutes each VLKN defined their sound through the social sensitivity and drum-driven passion of crust punk, the low-tuned yet threatening guitar themes of 00s deathcore and nu-metal (f. e. The Acacia Strain) while the essence of the sound is coming from a natural punk attitude that overrules any genre.

Lyrics:

It is time to understand
That divine teaching will be banned
Don’t get excited
We are never entitled – Never entitled!

Why we see so many people’s dream
Why we deal with such lifeless greed

To think or do what is right
Our minds have been bright

I would happily change
But even steps are deranged
We seek the truth
And strive for sooth
But self deception
Is a heavy burden
The Less control we have
The Less control we have
The more rage we get
The more rage we get

“”Problem – Reaction – Solution” is our quintessence, it reflects our musical references and insights about the world.” – comments the band.

“From lyrics point of view, there are no direct messages here, it just shows the general disappointment in the recent happenings and trends in the world – we tried to emphasize it with a compilation video from all around the world filmed last year.”

VLKN-band

Asked about their local underground music community in Hungary, VLKN admit that their local scene is suffering from a lot  of issues. “Main problem is COVID19 and restrictions, there is no possibility to play live shows and no proper platforms to spread your music in a wilder perspective (e.g.: radio, tv channels)”.

They continue: “Another part of the problem is that almost every underground clubs, pubs what give/gave space to hardcore, punk and any subcultures gigs in Budapest started to face with governemntal restrictions, buy-outs, etc. hence forced to be closed. Latest and greatest example is the legendary home of many shows, the Durer Kert, but there are many little clubs facing with similar problems in and outside of Budapest as well.”

Favorite albums of all time, by members of VLKN:

Marton (vocals):

Thursday – War All The Time

The third full-length from the legendary Thursday was my introduction to the band, hence it sticks to me forever – I consider it as the greatest post hardcore album ever. The LP features the impeccable hit For The Workforce Drowning, but all the songs are so heart-filled and radiating a unique atmosphere.

Attila (guitar):

Disfear – Live the Storm

I’ve to admit that I found this band 4 years ago (shame on me). From the very first moment they caught me and have not released me yet.
Their sound is more than perfect and the guitars’ playing are awesome. I picked the ‘Live the Storm’ album, as per my opinion, it’s their best album ever in themes and sound as well.

They have so many catchy melodies with enough dbeat/crust motives over the songs to not be called neocrust by old fashion guys, but my personal favorite is the last song ‘Phantom’, that 7 mins great epos is worthy of this tremendous album.

Ball (guitar):

The Acacia Strain – Wormwood

The heaviness and straight forward to the wall mentality of the record simply crushes and amaze me at the same time. I have a very special connection to this album.

Szabi (bass):

Only Crime – Pursuance

Typical supergroup featuring members of Good Riddance/Bane/Modern Life Is War/etc. and the songs are over the top in terms of quality. I play bass in VLKN, however I love to play guitar as well and the musicianship of this record is one of my favorites.

KristΓ³f (drums):

Counterparts – The Current Will Carry Us

One of my favourite albums that maximizes the potential in the genre and the agonizing lyrics content are still etalon for me.
