Celtic punk has its roots in The Pogues, who in the mid-1980s showed that punk’s spirit could survive inside the Irish folk tradition. Line-ups vary from band to band, but the instruments carry the sound: banjo, mandolin, accordion or bouzouki beside guitar, bass and drums, with choruses written to be sung back.
The Roughneck Riot have worked out of Warrington since 2010, banjos and mandolins behind an anti-fascist message and the line that folk is the original punk. The Rumjacks took a different road on “Hestia”, a fifth album made by an international line-up with a bouzouki in it. The Feelgood McLouds shared a 27-track playlist of Celtic folk punk for St Patrick’s Day 2023.
