Darkwave developed during the 1990s as goth rock crossed with synth pop and dream pop. The style was more somber than goth rock’s industrial-dance offshoot, with Clan of Xymox and Psyche among its early defining names. Dead Can Dance and In the Nursery brought classical song structures or medieval instrumentation into later branches, while Lycia moved toward ambient textures.
